Battery question

I hear that in Japan there is a Lithium Ion battery that does not discharge (at least it takes many years). How is this possible, and is this even possible? I read about this battery on the web somewhere, but cannot cite the source at this time.

If this technology were implimented here, then this would radically change the PDA/cell phone industry.

Thanks,

John

err No. You are probably referring to a cell that has a low "self discharge" rate. Most batteries loose their charge over time even when not used. .

Alkaline batteries have a shelf life of about 5 years (eg approximately 90% capacity remaining after five years "on the shelf")

Lithium batteries have a very long shelf life - 90% full after 10 years.

Nickel Cadmium cells have a short shelf life - 90% full after 24 hours!.

Nickel Metal Hydride cells can be even worse than Nicad I believe.

I agree pretty much here, but

Not in my experience, they seem to hold up quite well, until end-of-life, where they will dive nose in hours.

This is why my digital camera still uses Lithiums and wont downgrade to rechargeables.
