How do select the right controller?

After the requirements for a new application are known and a prototype shows the minimum requirements,

1) how to select the right=smallest=cheapest controller? 2) Are there any vendor independent tables available?

Many thanks! Werner

You should first consider which factors will make your product successful. Smallest/fastest/cheapest may not even be relevant, depending on your design, marketing and production requirements.

Consider the big picture first...

Hi Andrew, you're right, a mutual effort of all resources within a company is needed to develop, produce and sell the right product. To create an business case you have to know your options and even its just a relatively small component of it, it would be nice to know which controllers would fit your requirements. Changes to a new platform/architecture is always costly and risky, but in some cases also a good opportunity to get an better product at the end. I was just hoping, that for small companies that expect to produce relatively small series of products there are some vendor independent lists available. (Bigger companies will know where to look, I suppose).

Many thanks! Werner

If your expected sales volume is small then the processor price is almost an irrelavence. The trick here is to use a processor that saves you the most software effort, has all the hardware periferals you need and runs at least twice as fast as you think you will need. Start by identifying all the "problem" areas that the processor will have to do, ie. does it have to do anything really fast, does it need a large memory, does it need to run at very low power levels, and so forth.
