Wind Vane

I found an article in a 1998 "Electronics Now" mag that shows how to build an electronic wind vane using a rotary encoder and a 74HC154 decoder which will send the signal to the correct LED. The article states that this circuit will work up to 30 feet using a five-conductor cable for antenna rotators. My question is, can the signal be boosted somehow so a longer cable can be used. I would be installing the sensor on top of my two story house, and I would need to use about 70 feet of cable to mount the indicator where I would like it.

What about a differential driver, like an RS485. Driver on the roof, receiver down below. cheap and simple. With well shielded cable you probably wouldn't have a problem anyway.
