Will 6v adapter work on 5v appliance?

Hi all,

I bought a linksys wireless router over a year ago, second hand from a store. The plug they gave me with it didn't work, it didn't even fit! Anyway, I was busy at the time so didnt go back and complain.

Now I need to set up the router. Underneith it says it is 5v - and on eBay I can buy an mult-adapter with a bunch of round connectors, one should fit. But it does lots of voltages apart from 5. The nearest is

4.5 and 6. Will either of these do? I don't know about electronics.

-The multiplug is about 7 pound delivered. Alternatively the official linksys one from their website is about 15 pound delievered... I'm a student so I need to save this money!

Many thanks for your help!

ps. I remember I used to run a big keyboard off a smaller multi adapter, probably the wrong voltage. Every now and then the keyboard would freeze and just jam up and say error on the LCD :) -But I need the router to be reasonably more stable!

fair enough: It says on the bottom of the router: Model No BEFW11S4 (it's an old 802.11b router)

another label underneith says Power: 5V DC 2.5A

I'm reluctant to contact the manufacturer because firstly, via email I'll never get a timely reply. And secondly they'll just tell me to buy one of their own expensive plugs, rather than advise me so I can buy one cheaper elsewhere.

** Impoverished Groper Alert !

** Bet anything that means the supply IS * REGULATED * and of 2.5 amp capacity.

Forget cheap, multi-voltage adaptors.

Keep looking for "regulated" or SMPS adaptors of the needed spec.

The maker's offer is not too bad, actually.

Phil Allison is dead right on this one...

The correct PSU is undoubtedly an SMPS regulated device so that is what you need to buy. The only problem now is to find one with the right plug with the right polarity for the router. If you need to you may be able to fit a suitable plug to the cord if required.

Here's an example of something like you require

I doubt the slightly lower current rating will be a problem.

thanks... unfortauntely though I have to find something from the UK to order... I guess I'll have to keep looking around though. I'm just annoyed because I bought the router second hand initially, they supplied it with the wrong plug - didn't even fit - and I was too busy to complain. Now I'm stuck with having no plug, no router and to buy their new plug will cost almost as much as a crummy second hand router all over again, but from amazon marketplace... goes to show, it does pay to complain about these things when they happen :(

And today, both my laptops HDD's died too :(( I'm desperately posting elsewhere for a way to retrieve the data off them...

Thanks for your above help.

--by the way, if anyone happens to be throwing out an old linksys router, i'll pay for the adapter from it! --Small chance I know, but same with two computers corrupting in 10 mins.

** Impoverished Student Groper Alert ...

** When I was a engineering student, I thought a shiny new slide rule was a status symbol.

Then the HP35 came out and blew that idea away.

Cost was over 20 times my weekly living allowance.

The supply is regulated, but Linksys used the same power supply for a lot of different equipment so you should be able to find one, used. If you are in school, post a request on their bulletin boards, or ask around at computer stores or the school's IT department. I have at least four different models that use the same Linksys power supply.

2.5A is a fairly large current and this is reflected in the price of the plug, I bet that adjustabvle one doesn't do 2500mA, probably more like 300mA.

you could use this one, but it won't save you money.

those radio transmittters chew the power, get the genuine adaptor the price is right.
