Video Camera for a surveillance camera

Hello,

I have been having trouble with some kids destroying a fence that I have built. I have an old 8mm video camera and a VCR that I'm not using. Is it possible to hook it up so that it records onto a VCR tape? I could put the video camera by a window to try to catch the people involved. If it's possible, please let me know what cords I have to buy to make this work. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

John

This sounds like a place for the X10

hardware.

They have a camera, motion sensor, and VCR controller for about $90US. The motion sensor is wireless and smaller than a pack of cigarets. It is mounted outside the house (IR does not work through window glass) to monitor the area of interest and the video camera aimed at that area. When motion is detected, the VCR is put in record mode for 5 minutes. If there is still motion after 5 minutes, the VCR will be triggered for another 5 minutes.

I had a problem with kids and grafitti on the back of the house, but the problem went away after calling the police and installing the camera.

My experience with X10.com is that they what they offer is utter and complete junk. Overpriced, utter, complete, worthless junk. (Their "outdoor" cameras hold water. The lenses are plain plastic. I could go on.) And once you get on their spam list, you will never ever get off.

For the real stuff, go to . More $$$ but the stuff works, and works well.

The way I would do it: Combine camera, vcr and outdoor halogen light including motion sensor (cheap cost around 10 $...in Finland at least). The signal from motion sensor would be connected to a *circuit* that can control the rec and the stop buttons in the vcr. Such a delay 5 min or any is easy to apply. Camera is feeding the vcr all the time and motion sensor decides when vcr takes it in.

If you want to scare the kids then just let the area to be illuminated with the halogen after motion and maybe they don't even want to be there breaking places any more. If you want to be evil, then replace the halogen with IR illumination source (or make a hi-pass mask in front of it) and remove IR filter from the camera if necessary. They'll never know about your movie making business.

This naturally is valid only if there is dark. The over/under exposure of the camera image must also be concerned.

That kind of a system would need some soldering and dummy-basic knowledge about electric. Hardest thing for me would be the circuit. I have never been good with those. You can always ask for assistance from the newsgroup ;).

Let us know how you did it.
