ELF detector

Sep 25, 2004 5 Replies

Hello,

I was hoping someone could send me in the right direction to find information on a low frequency detector. Either a low cost purchased unit, or the schematics to build one. I am trying to detect in the 0- 30Hz range. I appreciate any info, Larry

Seriously though, you might want to check out some of the paranormal websites, they seem to do a natty line in various types of meter to detect 'phenomena' which, IIRC, include ELF fields of the magnetic and electrical sorts.

The problem there is that even if one gets a good reading of a magnetic field or an electrical field in any direction, most don't know what to do with the data or what it means. Also, there must be care taken in the actual measurements- for example waving a handheld device around will not get you good electric field measurements as ones body distorts the local field.

The cynic in me would suggest that's because there's no 'what to do' with the data, just a bunch of paranormal cobblers.

Of course, but that's not to say the OP couldn't use a handheld device in a static location.

============================ So how about a loop antenna, an instrumentation amp, and a 30 hz active lp filter and a scope?
