(To interface with our common electronic distribution systems, electrons of course have to move, and electrons also move between atoms and ions in such chemistry; but ions are the charge carrier in solution.)

electron (or hole) carriers, but the electrons are still the charge
carriers and are what cause the ions to move about in the bath.

The diode schematic symbol originally represented a pointy contact wire (cat's whisker) pressing against a bulk mineral base, often galena or silicon. Fortunately but accidentally it also points in the direction of conventional current flow.
The "+" on a diode or rectifier indicates the terminal that would deliver a rectified positive voltage. So applying + to the "+" terminal turns a diode off!

What do you mean by "negative" being technically incorrect? I believe it's more correct than saying "ground," unless you know that there is actually a common ground point in the circuit.

Ask yourself this question: Do I want this diode to conduct when the voltage across it is about .6 volt? If the answer is yes, point the arrow to the negative side.
