AA batteries in AAA slot?

I am wondering if it is possible to use AA batteries in AAA slots. Of course, I wouldn't be able to fit them in, but I was thinking that since AAA batteries are so hard to find I would just take some wires and tape and wire on some AA batteries instead. For example, my MP3 player, TV remote, and 3rd party wireless Gamecube controller take AAA batteries, it would be very handy to use AA batteries with them instead. Would this ruin them? I'm thinking they might overload the circuits.

Similarly with C or D batteries in AA or AAA slots.

All the same voltage, so all can substitute for each other. Larger cells just sag less and last longer.

Thanks for the confirmation. I knew they were the same voltage. I read the larger ones I listed are capable of considerably higher discharge rates, and I figured something bad could come of that.

Their discharge rate depends on the load connected to them.

To really sex it up, get some wooden dowel the size of the AAA, and stick a brass thumbtack in each end for contacts. Solder wires to the tacks, and stick the dowel in the AAA compartment, with wires to the other cells (which, like John said, can be AA, C, D, or even #6 if you're so inclined. ;-)

On what planet are AAA batteries hard to find ?

Well, not necessarily hard to find, but only available in ridiculously (comparitively) smaller quantities (I've only seen up to 4-packs, and right next to my computer is a 50-pack of AA batteries) and alot more expensive (a 2-pack of AAA is generally more expensive than an 8-pack of AA, same brand).

Hmm.. Well, I've never even seen a store with that name. What's special? Large quantity, low price, or both?

So buy a 4-pack of rechargeable AAAs, and a charger. You'll be amazed at how quickly it will pay for itself.

I might do that if I come across such a thing in the future. That's a good idea. Until then anyway, C batteries and AA batteries shall be my preference.

(I had rechargeable AAA and AA alkaline batteries once. They worked, but ended up a disappointment. Some leaked, and they permanantly lost capacity faster than any other kind of rechargeable battery I have ever had, even though they were advertised not to. They also only lasted about half as long as regular cheap alkalines per charge. I probably won't be going back to rechargeable alkaline in the future..)

Your IP address appears to put you in Milton, Ontario, Canada. There are two Costcos in Mississauga, and another in Burlington.

Both.

Rechargeable alkalines suck. I'm not sure they're even made any more. Everything I've seen in the last five years or so has been NiCad or NiMH, either of which is way better.

Yeah, funny how those IP locators work. They're never right, just close. I'm in Fergus.

I went to that company's web site and they said the closest one to me is in Kitchener, 0 kilometres away. I think there might be something wrong with their distance calculations. Well, I don't know if I'll be going to Kitchener any time soon, so I think my current stock of C batteries and AA batteries are going to be more accessible anyway. Not to mention longer lasting. ^_^ Glad it was confirmed I could use them instead of AAA.

Doug Miller wote:

Agreed.

Wikipedia has an interesting line about that "NiCad": "The abbreviation NiCad is a registered trademark of SAFT Corporation and should not be used to refer generically to nickel-cadmium batteries, although this brand-name is commonly used to describe all nickel- cadmium batteries." -

So. NiCd. :P

I think it's a valid question. Perhaps it could/should have been more politely phrased, but a valid question nonetheless. AAA batteries can be found at virtually any pharmacy, grocery, hardware, office supply, or convenience store. They're not "so hard to find" by any rational standard.

Precisely. This Graham goon is always on the lookout for items

to demean someone if it will make him (the goon) look smarter than

I don't see him in quite so harsh a light. YMMV -- and you might want to spend a little time over in alt.hvac or misc.rural to see what nasty really looks like.
