Many would disagree that his policies were sensible or good:
Tariffs for example, are a very blunt tool and are equivalent to a tax on a country's own population. They were especially foolhardy for the US when applied to raw materials. Many hundreds of companies were put out of business. Even larger, established, ones such as Whirlpool suffered significantly.
