Trim ATX Power Supply

I want to use a switching power supply for my Altair. I need -16v,

+16v, and 8v. I could probably get away with 15.5v and 8.5v.

Does anyone know of an ATX power supply that can be trimmed that much? Either without modification or with the addition of new parts?

Thanks, Grant

I don't know, but you might want to check out the surplus places -- Marlin P Jones and All Electronics both have switchers at reasonable prices; a 15V that trims at all could easily go up to 16V, and you could probably pull a 12V down to 8.5V.

You could use +-12 and +5 by just jumpering around the regulators on the boards. Your +5 wire will have to be rather hefty, of course. :-)

Hi,

If you're in the UK, see if you can get hold of a copy of the July 2006 EPE Magazine (Everyday and Practical Electronics).

Here they turn an old AT PSU into 13.8V @ 17A whch may not seem radical except that they dismantle and re-wind the transformer so with suitable adjustments to the error amp (also described) you could have any voltage you wanted.

Is that necessary ?

Use a universal input ATX PSU, and adjust the 12V output to 13.8V. I did this and got 8A @ 13.8V regulated, no worries. If your running on low end at 110V AC input then your may run into problems. If no pot, then requires some resistor changes to the error amplifier.
