I am looking for a way to monitor equipment remotely. I am hoping to use radio transmitters to send a signal to a reciever connected to my pc. I have some experience programming in a commercial environment but have no idea how to go about achieving this.
Is radio the best way to go for low cost short distance wireless communication or should i be looking at gprs or some other technology?
Do you mean something like GE Sensing's GearTrak wireless equipment?

Depends on whether this is for a few units or for production. For a few units I'd look at "ready-to-go" ISM band radio transceiver modules. They are mostly geared to hook up to a serial port.
For large production runs TI has lots of chips, so do Nordic-Semi and others. But that means more testing to make sure FCC limits are maintained.
What data rate? What do you consider to be 'short distance'?
Not sure about data rates, the distance can vary between 1-10km. Is there something I shoudl be reading up on. Any pointers to the right information would be welcome.
