Telephone schematic

I bought an old push button telephone at the swap meet for $3.50 but it won't dial out. All the buttons work and produce tones that sound correct, but the line remains on the dial tone. I hooked it up to a scope using a 6 volt power supply and



470 ohm resistor and I can see the tones on scope when I push the buttons at about 2.5 volts p-p amplitude. Everything appears to working right, but the phone doesn't communicate with the other end.

I think the phone may be wired to answer only and not dial out and maybe only requires a couple connections on the transformer block to be adjusted.



Does anybody have information on the terminal block connections for older push button telephones using a keypad with one transistor?



There are 8 wires from the keypad that connect to various places on the transformer block (A,B,C,D, etc).

Try swapping the tip and ring leads; I think the red and green ones that come out of the wall. (or maybe blue/white and white/blue.) I had a new install once that wouldn't dial out - I flashed the operator by flicking the swtichhook ten times, and asked her to connect me to repair service, and the service person said, "sounds like polarity". The service guy came out and fixed it in a matter of seconds.

do you have touch tone serivce on your phone line?> , fdo other tt phones work?

if you can hear the tones but they don't dial, then you may not have touch tone serivce or the tones could be off frequency or too low in level

Maybe a European phone? IIRC the tones _are_ different.

Yes, I have tone service, my other tone phone works ok. I haven't compared the tone amplitude of the 2 phones, might be too low of a level. I noticed my off hook voltage is a little low at around 5 volts, with the new phone. Maybe the new phone presents a greater load to the line, and drops the amplitude too far?

I tried reversing the line connections and the tones don't work at all, so that's not the problem.

I'll do some more checking.

I think some old (dial era) phones needed ground on the yellow wire (G) in addition to the red/green (L1/L2). I have a 1967 model dial phone that I had to jump the G terminal to L1 to get it to work.

Followup #2: Before I looked up the link I just gave, I went and got a phone that was sitting in my garage, intending to give you the connection data from it. However, I hooked it up and had the same problem you did: it would talk with either line polarity, but the tones didn't work at all. On the base, it was stamped "2500MM". I compared it to the 2500MM schematic at the site I posted and it matched, but the wiring (especially the line connections) didn't match an old 500 C/D dial set I have. So... I undid all the wires and reconnected them per the 2500D schematic. The only difference was that since I don't have a yellow wire in the line cord, I connected the ringer black wire to L2. I also didn't have slate or slate-red wires on my ringer, just the red and black. Anyway, after I rewired it, I tried it again... talk, no dial... switched line polarity (green to L2) and it talked and dialed. Don't know if it rings, but I'm fairly sure it will, given that the ringer is right across the line.
