You are then about her age, as well. I'm a few years younger.
I don't know much about it, myself. At the time, she went to school right near Evergreen Park, if you know the area -- Beverly Hills, actually.
There's a famous picture with the police posing AND SMILING holding Hampton's body, on Fred Hampton's front porch. Easy to google up. At the time, they went on and on about how they had to defend themselves. Of course, it was entirely a lie. It was murder, plain and simple, as later court testimony and investigations were able to demostrate.
Um.. maybe, so. ;)
Nice man, I hear, and no question about his heartfelt music.
Interesting thing. In a business I cofounded in 1983, our head of marketing (long years of experience doing trade shows) was involved in setting up seminars in various cities around the country for our product. I remember dropping by and asking her about Chicago, because my wife had told me about all the bribery that went on (my wife worked in a bakery, for example, for a short time and would frequently overhear the arguments about payoffs by the 'inspectors' who were really just family members given lucrative, payola type positions where they could feather their nests.) I'd only known her for a short time, then, but she immediately started telling my all her own stories about Chicago. I asked, "So, are you including a bribery budget in the Chicago trade show and seminar event?" She immediately said, "Yup. Have to. Otherwise, our truck won't get to the loading dock, or if it gets to the loading dock, nothing will get unloaded, or if it gets unloaded, nothing will be allowed to get set up... etc."
She said, "It's the city that works." Then added, "If you have money to pay out all along the line."
I gather the system works. Kind of. Especially if you have cash.
I can't compare now to her experiences. She lost five friends she knew pretty well, all still in their 20's, to everything from bombs, shootings, immolation, and ... well, I just cannot compare our situation today to what she had to go though, then. And at the hands of police, gov't officials, and not only the mob or others on the seedier side of the law. Everyone was dangerous, then. All quarters were perfectly willing to engage in murder and mayhem.
Things are toned down a little bit from there.

I see very few that weren't replied to. :)

Actually, only East-bound traffic pays tolls on the NYSBA bridges (including the federally funded span of the Newburgh-Beacon). Westbound toll collections ceased on 8/12/70:

Also, I-84 was returned to NYSDOT in October 2006. There are still signs posted indicating that the Thruway Authority is responsible for maintenance.

...the point being that each generation seemed to have its "destructive" needs. I suppose they do it online, now. ;-)
I know Evergreen Park, sorta. It's by Midway Airport. Never heard of Beverly Hills, though.
He wasn't even a Branch Dividian.
Oh sure, but Chicago isn't alone here. NYC and Philly are the same. I suspect that Boston can be thrown in that slime, too.
If you want a pot hole fixed on your street you call your block captain. ...but the trains don't run on time.
At election time. There is very low crime on the Mafia boss' street, too.
Things are heating up again. We'll see.

I moved there in '74, so missed the two-way toll. Maybe NY got smart just before I moved there, but saw no other evidence of that.
I moved out in '93 (and other than a couple of days business in '94 have never been back), so didn't catch that sleight of hand. Note that the NYSTA is still responsible for maintenance. That's the tell.

It's my hope we don't.

Sometimes you just gotta have a little revolution.
T

Not for long. Maintenance is being transfered back to NYSDOT as part of the new budget. The transition is expected to happen in October:

Hopefully not the kind where police and gov't coercive forces are operating on about the same level as mob violence. One can hope for better.
If revolution comes from real concerns by the hoi polloi, I suppose that may be one thing. If if comes instead because they are used as the throw away tools of opulence and ambition, that would be another. Either way, it's no party and I will still hope to avoid its brunt.

Strange. I wonder what the game is now. Perhaps the bonds that were taken out to purchase the "maintenance rights" have been paid back? 1990 to 2010, sounds about right. I'm surprised they didn't just buy it again.

And if i catch a reply to Dimmie i have a tendency to ignore thread. Too far behind on reading.

I add them to the list and the filters.

There are too many people here that i otherwise want to read to just kill them off for a few replies to dimmie.

I was talking about dimmie's constant stream of stupid sock puppets. I see a new one, I update the list, then drop the smelly rag into the bit buck to compost.
J

I block those with the same alacrity that you do.

Too bad everyone doesn't. Then he can make his mindless rants to the newbies who don't come back, anyway.
