The roads in the Midwest don't vary much.

I used to use the Hudson River, and later, Lake Champlaign as my markers. Go East until you get wet, then it's a right (or left) turn. ;-)

No, those roads were originally built without fed $$. They have an I-number for convenience.

They don't in the East, either. If it weren't for continual excuses they wouldn't have tolls either. There is simply too much money involved to even suggest that governments would be honest.

Everwhere East of the Rockies? I don't believe there are *any* toll roads in the state. I know of one in GA, and it's one toll plaza on about 10mi of road

Note that the one-way tolls are always the same direction. If you cross the Hudson one way, the chances are that you'll cross the other, sometime, even if by a different bridge. It's a lot cheaper to only collect one way.

Huh? Interstates are confusing? Just *where* are you driving where there are the "confusing" toll roads?

What does the number of lanes have to do with anything? The Jersey Pike is at least eight lanes in each direction and it *moves*. The *stupid* ones are like the Garden State Parkway, with a toll booth every ten miles.

You'll have to give me an example. I find the Interstate system to be fairly obvious, tolls or no.

Don't remember the name. I grew up in IL about the time he was Sec. State, so I must have written a check or two to him. I do remember writing checks to an individual. Hell, we do that here for our property tax.

No, I don't. I'm strictly VFR. I do have to do _some_ instrument flying, of course. I seem to recall that 3 hours or something like that was a requirement to get my license. But that was still in VFR conditions... just "under the hood."

But keep in mind, I grew up in a place with 100,000 sq miles of territory and about 800,000 people in it when I started.

I'm in OR. Part time politicians meet something like once every two years. Much of the real power resides in unelected staff. Not quite the same, but it's no shangri-la. There are motives here, as everywhere.

At one time, downtown Ocala was overrun with wild monkeys that had descended from monkeys that escaped from Silver Springs, when they were making the Tarzan movies. THey were quite disruptive at the outdoor dining areas of some restaurants. :(

If you drive 1500 miles in the East, you're now in the West. You can drive coast to coast without tolls, if you want.

Interstates are *very* well marked. You do need to pay attention, sometimes, though. OTOH, there is nothing about a map that scares me.

hehe. Yeah, I was exaggerating to emphasize the point. The state's population was actually twice the figure I gave when I was born here -- 1.6 million. It is now getting close to 4 million.

I admit that's how some CA folks see it. :)

My wife was born in Evanston and she was there during some difficult times in the 60's and 70's. One friend of hers was blown up by a bomb in a movie theater. Another friend machine-gunned to death and found in a car trunk. Still another (a roommate of hers) immolated by gasoline, with the story about the girl appearing on the cover of a national magazine. This was the time of Jackson State, Kent State, the '68 Democratic Convention, Fred Hampton, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, you know.

She attended high school in Chicago in a 50% black/50% white school. Plenty of race riots in that school at that time. Eventually, she just quit and went to live in a small commune in near north Chicago (now co-opted into a 'rich man's' place, but at the time a low rent 'hippy' spot.) She was an editor of an underground newspaper called The Seed and the rented office space from the Black Panthers and used their printer to put out the newspaper. Which is how she got to know Fred Hampton, who was later murdered by a 14-man raid directed the the Chicago Police Department, the office of the Illinois State Attorney, and the FBI. They first killed his body guard, Mark Clark, before shooting Fred Hampton. When an officer noticed that Fred wasn't yet dead, another one pulled out a gun and shot him twice more in the head to make sure.

She attended the Chicago-8 trials (I think we may still have the judge's desk name plate around here.) She also recalls when Mayor Daley and the city council made it illegal to even sing in the city parks. I don't suppose you will remember who this is, but she also knew musician Phil Ochs, who walked her home once in a while. She also participated in lesbian "kiss-ins" just to rile things up in Chicago and of course made signs and was there for the '68 Democratic convention.

I also remember her telling me about watching poll workers "warm up" the voting machines by doing a bunch of straight- ticket lever pulls. You can guess which party benefited from the 'extra votes.'

It was 'interesting times,' I'm told.

Sure, I remember the times. I graduated high school in '70.

I went to school about 150mi South of Chicago. ...also quite a mixed-race high school. We had our share of race riots in high school, too. ...and anti-war riots, in college. No one want's to be left out. A few years before it was "water fights" (very dangerous, also) and a few years later it was "streaking" (not so dangerous).
