Glows in the dark, about 10x brighter and longer than the classic ZnS stuff. Seriously cool. I figure that if I paint a few square-foot hunks of white cardboard with it, it will make decent earthquake lighting.

Nah. Just mix some plutinium-239 with some phosphoric acid. You'll have light for the rest of your life! ;-P

Don't you mean strontium illuminate? Long lasting light but you own light may extinguish early.

Phosphoric acid? I've never heard of that being particularly fluorecent or phosphorescent. But I'd be interested to learn otherwise.

It is indeed understandable to read this with some skepticism. I wonder if it has been followed-up or similar experiments performed? I was also bothered by a lack of a date on the article.

I think I'll go see what the sci.physics folks have to say...

I especially liked the idea of using a TV set to generate entangled photons. At acute angles no less.

Just a pair of photons created simultaneously. They have opposite spin, and always do until they're destroyed. That has mind-boggling implications. If they fly in opposite directions and get a light-year apart, and you measure the spin of one as up or down, the other instantly acquires the opposite spin. Ditto measuring left/right.

No spookier than interferance, I guess, but that's plenty spooky.

A few months ago, I went to a 90 minute lecture about quantum mechanics (without the math). Impressive. It was meant for the average guy in the street, but I lost track after 5 minutes, although it also made sense. Strange stuff. I left the place totally filibustered.

I don't know squat about quantum mechanics, being only a lowly electronics engineer and all, but all these baffling quantum effects do not seem nearly as strange when you think of them not as the state of a physical system, but rather as what you can know about that state. From what I gather, physicists also start leaning in that direction.

The guy that told me about it could have been pulling my chain. (The phosphoric acid, that is, not the Pu.) I was working at an outfit where they built big vacuum chambers to do scientific experiments. One of them involved X-ray diffraction during molecular beam epitaxy - these vacuum chambers have ports where you can mount various experiments, and one of these experiments was just a flange with a glass window in the middle, that they had painted a phosphor screen on to, like an old fluorscope. (they also had an X-ray source.) I asked one of the guys, "What's the phosphor?" and he said, "Oh, you jut paint a little phosphoric acid on the glass and let it dry". I took the guy at face value, but he might have not known and just made it up, or he could have been yanking my chain, or it could have been true.

The plutonium, of course, you can read about anywhere where they're talking about nuke stuff. ;-)

The point was, the Pu will be giving off deadly radiation rays ( ;-) ), and the phosphorus will phosphoresce, right? ;-P
