Camera Pan/Tilt controller

I am wanting to find out more information on how to control a camera pan and tilt control device over a 1000 ft cable. We have the camera and we have the pan/tilt unit that has a handheld manual control pod on a 3 foot cable. We want to put a camera in the woods to monitor the various animals on our land and having the camera pan and tile 180 degrees would be very useful. Does anyone know where I can get more info on what it takes to transmit the handheld manual control unit's signal down a 1000ft cable? My first thought was to use two old telephones powered by an external power supply (24VAC or 48VAC) then send the pan/tilt control signal down the telephone line?

I will run a seperate coax cable for the camera's video signal.

Thanks, CJ

This depends entirely on how the pan/tilt controls are sent. If the thing was (successfully) designed for it, or if you're just lucky then you just need to put on longer wires.

There are as many different answers to your question as there are ways to convey power and the pan/tilt information from the manual control pod to the table -- and there's an infinite number of ways to convey that power and information.

You may also find that you need to play some games with your video if you want to send a baseband signal through 1000' of cable and have it look good at the other end.

There are plenty of RS-232 controlled pan-tilt mounts, and its easy to send low-speed RS-232 by means of modems and twisted- pair cable. That's the old standard way to do it, probably the cheapest mature off-the-shelf surveillance-crowd approach.

A more modern approach would be to use batteries and create a wireless WiFi link using high-gain antennas, both to receive commands and to transmit back the compressed digital video.

What make/model is the remote? Have a word with some of the specialist camera suppliers like

If its LanC, it might be a bit more difficult.

More importantly, how are you going to stop the camera from walking?

If you want to save your good cam and make a simple pan/tilt webcam (so we can watch too) then check my page below. 1000 feet is a long haul for control and video. You probably need to find out just how your controller works for the cam you have if you want to use it.
