We have a lot of immigrants from se asia, and they pick the local mushrooms without being aware of how deadly they can be. Whole families come into the er, desperately ill. After a couple days, they feel much better; a couple days later, they start dying of liver failure, and a transplant is the only fix.

There's a theory that a lot of the symptoms of mushroom poisoning are attributable to the misunderstanding of their psychedelic effects. Hallucinations? Hey, that's what they're _for_! %-} You do need a competent trip guide, however: "Hey, I think my heart is going to stop!!" "Cool! That's a new trip! Go for it, and tell us how it feels!" Or, "I think I'm losing my mind!" "Well, yeah, that's kinda the point."[1]
And no matter how intense of a trip you're having, it's still very stupid to jump out a window. That would be The Darwin Effect, I think. :-)
Cheers! Rich
[1] it can be quite interesting, building it back from scratch. %-}

I read in sci.electronics.design that "Rich Grise, Plainclothes Hippie" wrote (in ) about 'strontium aluminate', on Sat, 8 Oct 2005:
Yes, that's the dangerous way to do it. Stick to the natural way; grow the mushrooms.
They grow wild round here, but almost nobody knows how to identify them for certain, and if you aren't certain....

IIRC, Science News had a piece about a year ago where they could measure the superposition of two quantum states of the same object existing at the same time. Something like measuring that famous cat alive and dead at the same time.
It wasn't measuring the states directly, it was measuring an effect of both of them being there at the same time.

In 1966 or thereabouts I was using H2S in a fume cupboard where it was being produced by a Kipps apparatus.
After a while one tends not to notice its rich smell - but by a natural reaction I found myself choking on it and withdrew to get some fresh air. It took only a minute or so to recover but made me respect it.
I killed a wasps nest with H2S some years ago by piping the H2S to where the wasps were returning. They obviously realised something was up because I get stung a couple of times.
