Slioghtly OT: Audio during web-based design reviews

Holly golly, why limit yourself.

Never was the case for me, day job designing things, in the evening designing things and building things at home, in the weekend the same. Very often I used what I tried at home late in the night in my job, and it payed off. I guess electronics is a lifestyle.. But then I could probably be called a nerd...:-)

Well, you can buy plastic and metal boxes, a can of spray paint..

We did it very differently, I am talking worldwide phone links, the transmit side used a compander, and the receive side an expander, Philips NE570.

Later I used the Linux 'sox' program, it can mimic that chip 100%. We got pretty good signal to noise on intercontinental phone lines in the early eighties of last century...

It would not surprise me a bit if those conference softwares did not already have some option for that, would be the first thing to implement... But then again, everybody that participates needs to do it. You can actually also only use the expander and set a noise threshold.

Things like VOX and anti-trip come to mind too and should be familiar to you. I used headphones last time in conference what was it? Cannot remember the name of the service, dial via PC to US.

Because running Linux via a VM just to be able to use Linux programs is clumsy. I did it for a while but that got old fast.

Were you married?

My lifestyle is a bit different. Outside work my wife and I prefer to do lay caregiving, Alzheimer's visit's, things like that. This takes time.

If I don't find a workable SW solution I will build a box. But not with a hacked cassette player in there. In fact, I still have compressor boxes from my ham radio days. One homemade and one from Datong. Got to try those. But first I'll have to make a phone-line interface for that.

Well, the providers generally have that under their control because they distribute the require app. But ...

VOX is not the issue here. It's ok if all talk at the same time or into each other. The problem is that the guy from ABC town is 20dB lower in volume versus the guy in XYZ city. It's a major hassle during those conferences.

Part of this might not be equipment but people. I have worked with people where you could not hear them even if you were in the room with them. They would speak very softly and evem mumble along. It was not until someone would say "speak up" that you would understand them. Another was alway very low volume on the phone. He had a speaker phone but would turn away from it when talking to work on his computer.

Others I have known seem to think they need to yell into a speaker phone.

I, personally, use a headset for such web-based meetings. For one thing, holding a phone handset for an hour or so is literally a pain in the neck. I even had a wireless headset for a couple of days, but it was a crock and I took it back. ...Jim Thompson

Ever heard of speakerphones? :-)

Seriously, I thoroughly enjoy those. Got a pretty good Panasonic Easa-Phone for that. This way, if someone asks "Now what about the spike at 10V drive?" I could walk over to the bench, measure and keep talking. Without any stuff on my head getting tangled up.

Except with web conferences I always have to dash over and adjust the volume.

Oh, I know that all too well. So when a phone/web conf is set up I walk up to the front door, pretend to look outside, then all three dogs congregate there because there just has to be something interesting happening. Then I walk back, tell them "stay" and "good dogs" and close my office door. Especially the Labradors can really put on a sad puppy face when that happens.

The best was when Julie Clark took off in her T28 during such a call.

*RRRROOOOOAAARRR* ... "What the hell was that?". Here she is, taking off towards our house:

Ask the loud parties to speak more quietly and the quiet parties to speak louder, if they're technically minded they may adjust their mic gain, it's probably messed up like that for everyone.

Geez. Ya mean that A-law and u-law (the u is a Greek lower case mu) and DBX aren't enough?

?-)

I don't know. Nothing seems like enough when you figure out a way to get more.
