I took it outside where due to, ahem, global warming it was freaking cold. The reading off a retaining wall was 34F IIRC which pretty much corroborated what our outdoor thermometer said.

It is.

Well, it seems to work nicely to find out what gets hot on a board and roughly whether it's really bad or not. Ok, not 0603 parts like your FLIR camera but it does find the area where a resistor gets hot even it it's that small. Sure beats using fingers and burn gel.

Then everything in the room was at 70.2F, so you were reading either nothing or the reflected heat from the room. :-)

Yes but then I took it out to the driveway, measured again and it still showed 70. Dropped really fast since it was a crisp 34F outside.

Now I just need one like it that can measure the inside temperature of a rib roast without actually poking into it ...

I'll do Spock's 'Vulcan mind meld' on circuit boards to feel the heat. (Many fingers on many parts at the same time.) Then switch to McCoy: "Damn it Jim...It's dead!" :)

For higher temps, I've done the sebum smoke trick as a temperature warning.

Who makes a $3K thermal imager? Our FLIR (160x120 pix) cost about $10K. We looked at the Fluke, but it didn't look very good, and the Fluke people didn't seem to understand it at all.
