The point is that you want no power on the circuit while troubleshooting, and there are already safe tools that were developed for tracing out unpowered electrical systems.

I used one of the tektronix HE scope probes. I thought it was cool, but it belonged to the govt. I always wanted one.

Why are you cluttering up the NG with this PGP crud? Are you worried that you're too easy to imitate? ;)

I never saw it until you posted the "crud" as plaintext - perhaps you should get a better news client? :)
Technologies for privacy, security, authentication and encryption are good things that should be encouraged IMO.
Re the short finder, I used to do it by injecting an amp into the short and following the voltage drops. Now I usually use a precision ohmeter instead, saves a few steps.

Sounds like this:
Same concept, applied to a slightly different purpose: reporting the resistance of "lead" pencil markings and tap water instead PCB circuits. ... Fun, too... although it can be tricky to find a 4H-6H pencil
Enjoy... or find a kid to play with it after you've built it.

Which model probe did you use?
Mine is definitely AC. Has no response to DC.
HP 547A Current Tracer Specifications Input Sensitivity: 1 mA to 1 A. Frequency response: light indicates single-step current transi- tions; single pulses > 50 ns in width; pulse trains to 10 MHz (typical- ly 20 MHz for current pulses >10 mA). Risetime: light indicates current transitions with risetime

not how they avoid the issue of the output stage, by redrawing it with the transistors swapped.

I give up. What does the fact that they're HP tell me? More than the actual spec sheet quoted below? And I've seen 'em and actually measured one TODAY.
