Not at all. There are serious simulation research tools that are now able to mesh with experiments on modest sized animal brains. It makes much more sense to model the much smaller sized brains of insects before trying to do a human brain. Bird brains will be next and they clearly are not self aware - have a blackbird outside attacking its reflection in a garden ornament right now.

You would be surprised how even the simplest systems can have very complex emergent behaviour.

They have tried mashing rat brains with damage to establish if memory is held in a particular place. So far all attempts to find a location have failed dismally so it looks like long term memory is widely distributed. Chances are for moderate damage you will transpose a digit or something

Interesting page, but disrupting short term memory before it becomes permanent is pretty commonly done in US hospital practice. They use _versed_ like they might water. Works all too well, too.

Note the phrase that it can "prevent any memory of the event." Which is pretty accurate for hospital uses here.

Hospitals here are awash of the stuff. It's use is routine.
