Service docs for older HP gear?

Hello to All,

The old HP3577 came used, with operating manual but not the service manual. It has been good to me but since another HP analyzer (with service manual) recently had gotten quite sick and I had to repair it: Is there a better source than Agilent for those service manuals?

Reason I ask is that the download version is a scanned PDF file that was scanned with way too low resolution. None of the pin numbers or other important lettering in the schematics is readable which renders them quite useless. I had a hunch of that when downloading since the file size is only 7.5MB for a 345 page document. That just could not work. Google didn't show any other source.

Regards, Joerg

Hello Dave,

Thanks. They want $115 but if it's printed out that's not too bad. Blows part of a toner cartridge to do that :-)

My understanding is that they sell you the actual book printed by HP, not a copy or CD.

That is correct... I have bought a number of HP manuals from them and they have always been originals. Their web site states that the manuals they sell are always originals unless they have been licensed by the manufacturer to replicate.

Make it idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Hello Dave,

have

The ones I was looking at said "reprint". But as long as that is clearly stated it should be fine. I might just go and buy one there but first I'll look for a pdf somewhere. A CD consumes so much less space than yet another binder.

Did you look on Ebay? Lots of manuals are offered, not only in auctions, but also in Ebay shops.

Hello Nico,

I did. There were zilch for the 3577. Also, I have met a few too many people who got burned buying that way. I'd still consider it for a manual though.

Manuals (including service) for most of HP older gear are available as PDFs from Agilent web site for free. I've got the full sets for HP 3456A and

3562A two weeks ago. Operator's, Service, and GPIB programming. That's one of the reasons why I personally like 'em.

Click manuals, go to test equipment. Search for your

3577. There is a service manual for 3577A there. I don't know if there is such thing as 3577 without 'A' and if this manual covers it if it exists but you can try. The file name is 03577-90012.pdf.

Hello Sergey,

Have you looked at the schematics in there? On the 3577 service manual the scan resolution has been set so low that none of the IC pins numbers is readable.

No, I didn't, my bad... Seem like an exception for me, that service manual is just 8 MBytes... Service manual for 3562A is 28+ Mbytes, everything is quite readable. Some of the pages are upside down but it's not such a big problem :)) Did you try to get in touch with Agilent guys and ask them for a better copy?

Hello Sergey,

I know, it's on my hard drive. But the schematics are not readable. They scanned them with the resolution way too low. I wrote to their web master about it, let's see.

Hello Sergey,

I did write the web master. Don't know if they want to go through the effort of scanning it again. I sure hope they do. After all, scanners nowadays have sheet feeders so you put the whole stack on there and walk away (hoping it doesn't jam, of course).

Agilent recently understood that gathering all these old manuals and making them available will help their image. But AIUI it really is gathering, i.e. from individuals personnal scanning efforts. So you get what these people give. Well, that's still better than nothing.

There's a yahoo group for old HP instruments users that might be of some help.
