Robert Proctor on ignorance (O.T.)

Dec 08, 2008 24 Replies

The following is a direct quote from Discover Magazine, Jan. 2009, p. 12

Q: How common is the active creation of ignorance?

A: It's pretty common. I mean, in terms of sowing doubt, certainly global warming is a famous one. You know, the global warming denialists who for years have managed to say, "Well, the case is not proven. We need more research." And what's interesting is that a lot of the people working on that were also the people working for Big Tobacco.

It's an extremely isolated and thus meaningless metric (based on the context into which it was foisted).

Big Tobacco used the same techniques.

Most of us know better.

Quoting who? Full context, please.

Discover trivialized itself many years ago. "Journalistic" writing, tons of whitespace, idiotic collages, politics instead of science.

Simulations are not proof. Faked data is not data. Skeptics are not denialists.

MOST of us don't. The BS just keeps getter deeper. Sheeesh!

The Pacific Ocean temperature is at a 5 year record low (just reported today). The sea creatures are reproducing like crazy.

The politically correct crowd. The same bird-brains that are pushing this...

Now! Now! John! Spell it "sceptics" to keep the fairies happy ;-)

Ever see "Unsolved History" on the Discovery channel? It's great fun... they go through various unsolved events in history (e.g., who shot down the Red Baron?) and attempt to determine what the "most likely" scenario is that "solves" the puzzle in a logically consistent manner. Of course, at the very end, the conclusion is always prefaced with, "*If* all of our assumptions and suppositions are correct, *then* it was Charlton Heston who shot down the Red Braon!" -- they don't attempt to pass off their conclusions as fact... like certain global warming proponents do...

Both of you have mis-spelled 'septic'.

Users of the method of deductive reasoning and global warming proponents are mutually exclusive populations, are they not ?:-)

Discover Magazine should rename itself "Dinosaur", because it's mostly what they talk about, and mostly what they are.

Cheers

North Central Florida has broken records for cold temperatures several times already this season. Marion County has had multiple nights of 30 degrees or colder so far.

There are two kinds of people on this earth: The crazy, and the insane. The first sign of insanity is denying that you're crazy.

We've been getting into the high 20s every night. It's amazing how=20 much water there is in the air to squeeze out into frost on my=20 windshield every morning. It's usually sunny and in the 50s by=20 noon. Compared to VT, this is wonderful! (let me count the ways -=20

4000 of them in property taxes alone).

It's still a part-to-whole comparison flaw, since not all people working on Global Warming were formerlly associated with Big Tobacco.

How are you doing with that Nichtlachen-Keinwortz syndrome?

It was a joke (OK, a lame one). But its not necessary for the 'straight man' to realize that a punch line has been delivered. Sometimes it works out better if they don't catch it at all.

Worse yet, I've spent all this time trying to get onto Thompson's kill file. But if you insist on replying to my posts, he'll have to read my stuff.

Unless he kill files you too.

Paul, Now that your boy won, you haven't been outrageous enough to rate kill-filing.

Also, as soon as your boy starts his socialism nonsense, taxing you, I figure you'll shut up completely ;-)

I have my ways. Ever hear of a message field named "References:" ?:-)
