Jim Thompson doesn't actually "excel" in integrated circuit design. His designs work and meet their specifications, but fall a long way short of the sort of the excellence that Bob Widlar delivered, and Barry Gilbert still delivers from time to time.

was more famous, but less impressive, and C A G LeMay - who invented the feature of the EMI body scanner that made it practical - was a clever man but a total disaster as a development engineer, and I had to work hard to avoid having to get involved with his lunatic ultrasound image reconstruction project.

If only one terminology is correct, is "Sziklai pair" or "complementary Darlington" also ignorant?

So it sounds like he learned electronics as a Navy tech. The military, and some of the trade schools like Heald, used electron flow convention. That confused a lot of people who never recovered from it.

I've tended to be wary of hiring ex-military techs, because they tend to be too rule driven to work in a design environment. But we do have a new embedded system programmer, ex-Navy, who is very good. I need to teach him to have less respect and more ideas, but I think that will happen.

"Sziklai pair" is a trifle pretentious. People like me and Winfield Hill know what it means, but a lot of perfectly respectable electronic engineers don't.

"Complementary Darlington" is pretty much self-explanatory, while "pseudo-Darlington" isn't.

Particularly "boring" if you don't happen to know it.

How does the closed-loop gain/phase behavior of an 800 KHz opamp affect a 100 MHz oscillation? JT is strangely silent on that, so maybe you can explain it.

JT is probably good at what he does, but he gets helpless as soon as he gets off-chip, or has to deal with physics or electromagnetics.
