Their covert subsidies to a variety of organisations of "concerned scientists" some of which data back to the "smoking is bad for you" debate, whose aim in life seems to be undercut public belief in whatever scientific evidence happens to be bad for large industrial organisations. The tobacco companies paid to set up this kind of network several decades back, and Exxon-Mobil used it recently to sow $16M worth of doubt about global warming.
