Rat Shack fire sale

The local Radio Shack is finally giving up the ghost, and going out of business. Clearance sale, everything 50-90% off. This one still has a big bin of components, all of them 90% off.

Most of the random caps, leds, resistors etc. aren't a particularly good deal even at 90% off, but there were some nice bargains - tons of mechanical stuff sitting around like connectors and jacks.

Picked up a bunch of BNC male crimp connectors for RG59, $1.79. For eight. DC power jacks, 39 cents each. 8 ohm 20 watt power resistors, 10 cents each. 2N3055s, 39 cents each. 2 oz rolls of 60/40 a buck each. 4 pack of screw-terminal miniature lamp holders, 39 cents. Stereo headphone jacks, pack of 2 for 49 cents.

Also a really nice Sparkfun temp-controlled soldering station for $40. There's still one left!

Anything I should look out for? I might grab the other soldering station. Anyone have any requests?

About 4 months ago I went looking for 50' of RG6, they only had 25' lengths. Wound up getting it at Best Buy across the street. Rat shack used to be good for TV, Phone, audio stuff and a free battery, not anymore.

Those are all overpriced even at 90% off.

If they have the nice Vidmar cabinets to hold the parts, buy those.

I was thinking about that, they have a big rolling metal cabinet, it's really nice but gigantic. Not sure exactly where I'd find space for it at the moment.

Well, I'll see what they want for it on the last day.

This soldering iron is pretty darn nice for $40!

I wonder what I'll do with these molly-guard switches; build my own launch vehicle or something. I already have a buyer lined up for a bunch of the automotive toggle-types.

I have a big Vidmar cabinet in my lab that I bought retail in 2009ish, and have been very happy with it. If you can get a full sized one (5 feet high or thereabouts) for a few hundred bucks, that's a good deal. They're getting on for $2k new nowadays, I hear.

Cheers

Nice! This store had a lot of parts relative to most Shacks these days; their component cabinet system looked to be like 4 of these units: 2x2 back to back:

Their educational kits were always superb, especially the physics based ones. But they were marking those down to peanuts 15 years ago so I guess they dropped them altogether.
