The reason for all kinds of radiation scares is that a humans can't directly detect most of the EM spectrum.
If every person would be equipped with a reliable radiation detector (for both radio wave as well as ionized radiation) e.g. as part of a smart phone, such scare would be much less.
Of course, a logarithmic scale (such as decibels) should be used.
When people are subjected to "invisible" radiation, it should be easier to visualize with such tools.

It will measure the very weak gamma from K salt.

OK, I'll do it this weekend. Ocean Beach is great in a storm, and I haven't been to Baker Beach (the original Burning Man site) in ages.
The sand here is coarse and grey, not the boring white Florida stuff. It has lots of ground up rocks and stuff in it. The Great Highway, the road along the beach, is often closed in the winter, as mountains of sand blow over the seawall onto the roadway. The city paid people, for decades, to haul it away, until somebody figured out that people would pay the city to haul it away.

It is not about panic, yes that chart that shows tsunami wave heights is silly, it is about what is really going on. US is a big polluter, drinking water with fracking, plutonium from nuclear weapon facilities, it all adds up. And CFL backlight behind a LCD gives a much worse color picture than a CRT, So, quality is moving backwards with all this, mp3 is worse that good analog audio, or wave. Now we have interlaced on non interlacable screens like LCDs .. TVs that need half a minute to power up, not counting the zillion menus you have to go through to adjust something. Lets nuke it all and start over again from the human user POV. :-)

I agree with Jan on this aspect. That's why I bought my own counter. I don't trust 'official figures' which are often corrupt whether they relate to the level of the radiation plume in the Pacific from Fukushima or something as fundamental as the rate of inflation; nothing 'official' should be taken at face value. There's too much incentive for figures to be f***ed around with.

Circumstances, including weather, have kept me from getting sand from Ocean Beach. But we did go down to Camelot, the ersatz British pub in Pacifica that has fried-oysters-and-chips, and Bass on tap, so we walked to the beach and got some sand and a few small rocks from there. It's about a mile south of Mussel Rock, which is itself maybe
100 yards offshore. The San Andreas Fault leaves land and goes out into the ocean between the beach and Mussel Rock, so geological stuff may be happening.It's interesting on Google Earth. You can clearly see the fault, especially the chain of subduction lakes that store SF's drinking water.

Absolutely, with all the Nuclear reactors that have been decommissioned as a result of Fukushima. For example, Germany are now burning more coal than ever before!
