Even worse. A live 20V connect arcs. The contacts will be s*it within a couple hundred insertion/removal cycles.
It would require delayed, on sense only energization. As in it will not happen Unless the 5V or conduction sense line is incorporated.

I'd check the USB 3 standard, which is freely available gratis. It may be at 48 Volts (used by Power over Ethernet), so 100 Watts would about
2 amps. There is also a negotiation dance before the hub will supply the 48 volts.

I know of NO PC connected or fed standards that are at 48 volts. Especially not at the consumer product level.

Not sure what your point is. I assume you're talking about the rest consumption (for heat, pumping blood, etc.). One can "use" somewhat more than that but I didn't come equipped with a USB jack.

Current cables use like 26 or 24 gauge wire. Neither passes 2 amps happily, and barely do so well.
There are enough problems with "current cabling" with a mere 5 volts. It is ridiculous to think that adding another rail is going to work well when they can't even keep the 5 volt and signal lines feeding properly.
Pins and fully captivated receiver 'sockets' are the way to evolve. I WILL spend time making sure I get connected clean. Making it some lame "anybody can do it without thinking" CRAP is beyond stupid.
Even with pins... ANYBODY can do it.
Those who cannot should not even ever sit at a console until they get some mechanical prowess action/education going.

Apples and oranges. Ethernet connection schemas are an order of magnitude more robust than this crap is.
It would not be impossible. It would simply be a further continuation of 'the stupid'.
The cabling sucks. The hardware devices themselves are fine and continually improving.
The contactor design in ethernet is decidedly far better than USB. The contacted "wiped" area is greater. On USB that contact can be a spot no bigger than 1/4 of a mm in diameter. That doesn't cut it. 4 embedded flat contactors that rarely ever mate face to face nor over any appreciable distance. It is usually a single spot as previously described.
That is why the connectors are what heat up when charging devices. Those contact points are resistive and get more and more so every time there is a live insertion done.
Gimmie a mini DB-9 any day for this next gen thing, and you'll find that the extra conductors com in handy for future ideas like "dual channel" for instance, etc. Hell, that also would mean that any average Joe could wire up with std DB-9 ends too. The mini is just... well... mini.
They are held on by jack screws if desired, and ALWAYS obtain and maintain full positive electrical contact on all conductors, and even allow for a fully shielded run too.
The current design is the worst thought out thing I have ever seen in electronics in a long time. They should re-think any future "version" beyond that of signals and voltages. The damned hardware itself needs to be more robust. The current s*it isn't idiot proof, it IS the idiot.
And the data can be read from the emissions on the current stuff too. I see that as a serious security vulnerability. Albeit a bit closer proximity is needed than when trying to read an old keyboard, for instance.

The Samsungs are the same way, and after cable/charger contact deterioration, the battery will not even fully charge at times, and the cable wiggle fixes that. So I DO know EXACTLY what I am talking about, you pathetic, cringing, milksopping bitch.
The mSATA hard drive boots linux great on my i7, but accidentally brushiong the cable has caused crashes and has led to me being carefull when plugging in additional USB devices in adjacent ports.
So, that is BOTH power failure examples AND signal pass failures as well. EXT4 journalling drives don't like that s*it and will NOT retrain. Non- root volumes have no problem.
USB 3.0 connections have the same problems even on a brand new port and connection cable.

Nonsense. There is nothing weak about a high-side switch and a couple of wires.
Cabling sucks if you by crap cable, which you obviously do. Some hardware is fine, others not so much. There is a huge variation in the quality of the devices and their drivers.
Contactor design? There are no contactors used in PoE. You don't know what you're talking about (surprise, surprise).
Again, you show how dumb you are. Ever heard of "hot swap". High power USB doesn't plug hot. It has to negotiate its power and it can only do that once connected.
DB-9? Surely you mean DE-9... I don't think I want *any* sort of D connector on my tablet or iPod. Who cares about "any average Joe" making cables. That's about as dumb as it comes. ...not to mention the impedance problems at 480MHz and above.
What a crock. They may have been useful forty years ago but they're not all that useful for today's electronics. Hell, I remember the clunky cables dragging modems off the shelf. Dumb idea, even from you.
