poka-yoke

One of the documents I received from a customer refers to using a "poka-yoke tool" to assemble something.

I think we're supposed to have one.

Idiot-proofing sounds so much more impressive in Japanese, except if you or your child ever owned a Game Boy. ;)

That's the clever poka-yoke screw driver that only goes CW...

It's more of a interconnect design methodology. Say you have 2 DB9 connecting 2 different boxes. A1,A2 and B1,B2. If A1 *has* to be connected to B1 and A2 to B2 then then idea is to make it so you cannot connect A1->B2. Reverse the sex of the connectors or use a different connector size or key the connector some way. If you cannot do that then connecting A1->B2 should not "harm" the system and should provide some type of fault indication, not just a in-op system. Requires careful thought of the entire system interconnects and pinning.

That is good philosophy, if you design stuff for students.

Too funny! I can't tell you how much time I have wasted trying to plug-in USB cables backwards- no, wait, that *was* the right way. But, at least, I have done no harm...

TBH I wish micro USB connectors were a little bit more idiot proof. It seems some people are able to force them in wrong way round :(

Trouble is I can't count the number of times I was told when I lived there that "Japanese workers do not make mistakes" or saw dangerous equipment unguarded with a big slogan behind "Anzen dai ichi".

Literally "safety is number one" - in English "safety first".

It was there that I once walked into a lab with a bare 1kW microwave helium plasma sat on the bench like a bunsen burner uncaged with all interlocks defeated while the experimenter played with it!

Nice bloke too but a scary dangerous experiment.

Yes, you are supposed to have one. It's located inside your cranium. ;)

For the ones I have to plug in again often I make a mark on one side.

That is not the only - I have seen a DB9 forced in upside down.

you can get plugs that work both ways

the next gen usb plug will work both ways

well, actually you can't that's just a concept. and it looks impractical.

yeah, and powers devices upto 100W

Judging by the construction quality of many USB peripherals sold to date, I predict fire.

It's no coincidence that the human body uses about 100W.

Passing 20 amps over small interconnect cables with face to face small pressure contacts sounds a bit stupid, actually. It also sounds a bit hazardous, and the cables will exhibit even more problems than the current stupid human crap they have in the channel.

t

it will not be 20A, the 5V will be max 2A like is now for chargers power delivery will be 12V or 20V max 5A

Then, that is not 'next gen' USB cabling and interconnect. That is an entirely "next level" bus completely, and should not even be allowed to be referred to as USB, because it is COMPLETELY different.
