Arms race

"This year’s Cost of a Data Breach Report shows the cracks in the wall spreading. AI-driven attacks increased 56% over last year’s study. The financial consequences were not minor. AI-driven attacks added an average of USD 1 million per breach as AI tools allow attackers to increase their velocity and scale. That speed is reshaping breach economics—and not in a good way.

The global average cost of a data breach climbed 12%, reaching nearly USD 5 million. That increase was largely driven by detection, escalation and lost business costs. AI and automation remain among the most effective ways to reduce breach impact. They help security teams move at machine speed and save an average of USD 1.93 million in costs. However, the adoption of these tools across the security lifecycle remains uneven. We first noted this escalating AI arms race between attackers and defenders last year, when the global average breach cost dipped for the first time since the pandemic. Security teams seemed to be turning the tide. But this year’s report shows them losing ground in some key metrics."

What a great business model! develop a tool that an adversary can deploy... which requires others to deploy the same tool to counter it!
