If I had a business like that do you think a bank would lend me money? Do you really think the world will keep buying US debt if that debt keeps growing constantly? It will want some collateral, your land, your people, your property. Even then it will want a CEO change, a regime change if you want.

Now you may think I own the slingshot factory and anybody who does not lend me I will use those on.

However while you played with slingshots the others made much more useful tools, and outnumber you many many times.

NOBODY wants a bankrupt company at a high price, a loss making company not at all.

Your country launched into 20 years of war because even Saddam could see the writing on the wall for the US dollar and started selling oil for IOUs denominated in Euros instead, and Bush knew that the USA couldn't deflate their way out of paying a debt in Euros so he decided to trump up reasons to go take the oil anyhow.

I might, eventually. All I wanted to see was if there was any connection between the reactor and the engines and if it had any chance of actually working. The misleading title "Planes That Never Flew" apparently wasn't quite accurate. It flew, but not on nuclear power.

In that era, nuclear possibly meant a steam boiler, which would have made the airplane essentially a steam powered affair: Like on a submarine, the reactor and shielding are small compared to the size of the turbine, generator, and motor: It might have been possible to power the B36 piston engines directly with steam, which is a tempting short cut.

"Unlike the planned Convair X-6, the three-megawatt air-cooled reactor in the NB-36H did not power any of the aircraft's systems, nor did it provide propulsion, but was placed on the NB-36H to measure the effectiveness of the shielding."

Only 3 Megawatts? 3 MWatts / 746 watts/hp = 4,021 horsepower It will never get off the ground. The B36 had 6ea Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines, each delivering 3,500 horsepower for a total of 21,000 horsepower (not counting the jet engines): It would take 6 reactors of the size used in the test to get it to fly. The likely location of the 6 reactors would be on the wings, where the engines were located, probably to keep weights and balances sane. Even without the fuel in the wings, the added weight would probably cause the wings to break off. With jet engines being the big thing at the time, I doubt if any thought went into a nuclear powered propeller drive system.

I looks like the intent was to power jet engines directly, which makes more sense: Two General Electric J47 engines were successfully run by a 2.5MW molten salt reactor, but on the ground, not in the air. So, as far as I can tell, a nuclear powered airplane has not flown on nuclear power.

I assumed it was Bush+co wanting to show what big strong men they were. New American Century and all that. 911 provided them with a blank check to do whatever they wanted. (Hey, I just figured out "carte blanche" is basically French for "blank cheque".)

Look, I don't disagree that it could all come tumbling down. I just don't see dollars as being so much worse than any other medium of exchange that does not have intrinsic value. (And in fact slightly better for the US in that international debts are often denominated in it). Even with something like gold, *most* of the "value" is in the fact that it is accepted as valuable. Perhaps it's all tulips, but it seems to work for the most part. Are any economies actually fully backed by gold reserves somewhere? Do those economies do better?

When was the last time this was true for the USA, UK or any advanced nation?

Oh I see, Sorry. Still, the UK was an enthusiastic participant.

"New" american century was an admission that the basis on which the USA became a super-power had fundamentally changed. That is, "business as usual" was not going to keep it there. Super-powers are always built on being first/best at utilising a source of work (slave or colonial labour, coal, petroleum) - and this century, the USA is definitely *not* amongst the leaders.

The first gulf war started in 1990, and was the main trigger for 9/11. It was about oil from the very start.

It is different in that the home mortgage is secured debt and will be paid by the person borrowing the money. The national debt isn't either.

We're currently looking at this, with a discrete FET injection-locked GCO. Does anyone have experience with the ADF4007?

It depends on your noise floor. The ADF4007 uses low-Q on chip inductors which have very poor noise floor. The ADF4007 is around -100 dBc/Hz out to

1 MHz at 6.78 GHz and 1 MHz loop bandwidth. OK for SDR and satellite, but not for instrumentation. They even bypass their own internal vco and use the Hittite HMC358MS8G vco shown in Fig. 13. They claim the resulting phase noise is about the same, -100 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset.

Low noise vcos at microwave frequencies are definitely an art.

Well, there are different types of instrumentation. We are using LMX2571's, which are -120 dB from DC up, locked, excepting a few spurs. Period jitter is below 1 ps RMS, basically our measurement floor. That chip has three internal VCOs that span 4.3 to 5.4 GHz.

It's about $10 in small quantities. Anything Hittite will be a lot more.

Baseline, a surface-mount VCXO. Locked to optional OCXO. Locked to optional external reference.
