Astronomer, not astronaut. I did work for Sally Ride's advisor for a few months in 1984, before going back to building sandcastles on my optical table. If I'd stayed, I might have gotten a ride on the Shuttle myself, but by then I had dependents.

Well, I wouldn't have expected it to happen till after I graduated, which was in 1987. But that possibility was why I couldn't do it when I was married with small children, any more than I'd have ridden a motorcycle or gone skydiving. (My eldest was born in 1985.)
