pendrives

I can read it fine, but can't add or delete any files. This is Windows, so who can say what's wrong? Scandisk of course abends. SanDisk will sell me a utility that might fix it, ie fix their own failure, for more than the cost of another memory stick. No thanks. Bye.

I use a flash stick to carry files between work and home for offsite backup and working at home. So it's no big deal if it fails... nothing is actually lost.

I note here that Win XP handles USB devices very badly. It wouldn't surprise me if the file structure is a little snarled and Windows refuses to deal with it.

Just a long shot, but is there a write-protect mini-switch on that usb-drive?

Good idea, but I can't find one.

Try reformating or fdisk convert from fat to fat32, here's some free utilities to do it.

I went to the Apple store at the mall. A guy walked up to me and asked me what I wanted, and I told him "512M USB memory stick", and he got one for me. So I got in the checkout line (this just before Christmas!) Another guy with a portable RF terminal walked up, told me he could take my credit card right there, and did. Apple does everything right. I just wish my engineering software would run on their PCs... I'd dump the Microsoft/Dell crap in an instant.

What engineering software do you use, just curious?

If you really want a Mac, try Parallels. It lets you run Windows on a Mac.

if you can't write to it, is it possible you don't have write permission on the workstation you're at?. also, you should look for a write protect switch on the device. If you can't find that? right click the Drive letter it comes up as and check for a read only attribute setting.

Pads. The Xilinx stuff. Solidworks. PowerBasic. LTspice. Appcad. RFsim. TXline. Cross assemblers. Flash programmers. Background debuggers. Stuff like that.

Simultaneously? Does it really work?

You won't get a usbchip from atmel in dip.

You could look on avr freeks for the source code for bitbanging usb in any avr chip.

A avr usb chip that can be made to work as a pen drive at90usb1287

Cost you US$30 to buy a demo board(pen drive) for it from digikey.

I haven't tried it personally - a friend just got a Mac Mini from his girlfriend for Christmas, and he told me he was installing Parallels so he can run his Windows stuff.

Just my USD$0.02

Yes. There are currently 2 programs that does this on the current Intel Macs: Parallels and VMware. VMware is currently in beta though and i think the beta version doesn't support windows. I hear parallels is quite good with access to USB and Ethernet form the virtualized Windows side. It's not as good as what VirtualPC used to be. VirtualPC had really tight integration with Windows. Too bad MS will not support VirtualPC on Intel Macs.

If you don't mind dual-booting there's always Bootcamp from Apple which is free.

Parallels works well, can run windows in a window etc Only for intel macs. I haven't tried xilinx or any flash programmers. Just make sure you have plenty of ram on the mac. You can try it before you buy

Keil tools work fine( haven't tried programming from in the ide yet)

How close to realbasic is powerbasic ?

Which cross assemblers ?

All the gnu tools and compilers are available (avr , coldfire , arm etc) Some through fink and darwin ports (like freebsd ports collection) others you get to build yourself. fink

one way:

you need to keep a count of the number of writes somewhere then what you do is have a with the count a pointer to the key sector, the key is where the allocation tables an directory live, the allocation tables cover the entire device and have the blocks that they occupy marked as in-use, every so many writes (by the count) you shift the key sector (and tables) to a new spot.

keeping a count of writes can be a simple at clearing the bits in a sector one at a time until they are all cleared...

variations on the above coule include making the key sectors invisible so that the logical sector numbering jumps from n-1 before them to n after them this'd mean that contiguous free space isn't needed for the key sectors.

If that infringes any patents they're stupid patents.

Judging by what we have seen here, you are being way over kind. They don't seem to feel that they should ever know their anus from an excavation, they will be management in a few years.

Out of that group most can be got to run in Mac (softPC or equivalent) except for the flash programmer. The background debugger can also be expected to be problematic

Different part of the same group, but yes they expect to be in a very high pay job soon. (maybe twice minimum wage, and also expect to buy a house on that income, like in the 1950's) And yes, some of them are getting US engineering degrees somehow.
