Paging Jim Thompson

Did you design any of the chips in the Chevy Volt? I'm hearing good things about the car which makes me wonder if you have a part in it (I'd consider that a good thing).

Nope. I've designed LiIon chargers in the past, but not this one.

Wait until the LiIon batteries die at 2-3 years, then tell me about how you love the Volt ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Yeah, I have two Honda Civic Hybrids (Nickel Metal Hydride, not Li Ion) and am keeping tabs on the battery issues on those. But, seems all the hybrid and electric cars have a 100,000 mile warranty on the battery and hybrid/electrical systems. On the hybrids, the problem is the car will still run with a really sick battery, but cars like the Volt will be affected in ways that they will have to make the repair. So, at least for 100K miles, it is the manufacturer's problem.

So I went to the GM site (where they are overly optimistic) and read the fine print. 3800 lb car gets 37 MPG when running on the gas engine. Their electricity rate of $0.129 costing $1.50 per day works out to around 12 KWh/day. In CA we pay $0.203 so my 'fuel' is $2.35 for 35 miles on electricity and then getting the 37 MPG - on a $41,000 car. My $24000 Prius has averaged 50.7 MPG for 79000 miles. I know they're not directly comparable but how do you even break even with a Volt?

You don't. You failed to apply "green math" ;-) ...Jim Thompson
