St. Luke's is observing their 100th anniversary... perhaps the very first hospital in Phoenix.

I found out why all the major orthopedic surgery is done there. Built in an era where St. Luke's would be servicing high-end movie stars it has multiple indoor swimming pools, which are now used as therapy pools.

Are you on opiates? If so, be careful, they are addictive. What did your doctors tell you to do for recovery?

I'm presently at half-dose of prescribed... probably off altogether tomorrow. I quite despise feeling "doped-up".

I'm doing exactly as directed... "Resume normal activities as you feel able". Remember I got a "whole hip" replacement.

Anyway, it's great it went well. As it happens, C. had a scheduled routine operation the same day. All went okay, but general anesthetic has risks at the best of times, so there's always some worry.

It's not uncommon to have one leg shorter than the other, and to not even know. It can cause lower back problems however.

I started walking competitively five years ago, and it took a year before I realized that my left leg is 1cm shorter than my right. It is noticable in how much more of a hammering my upper left leg muscles take, and I tend to pad up my shoes under the insole. I first noticed it however when drying myself in front of the bathroom mirror when I realized my belly button wasn't on-center, and raising my left heel slightly fixed that.

Not too surprising it occurs with hip replacements either!

That's nonsense, frequency of occurrence of a bad result is in the one in 250,000 range, and then mostly with people who have other problems. To listen to the warning disclaimers, taking a simple 200mg ibuprofen can be a life threatening proposition...

If you want a good laugh, check out the MSDS for water.

IIRC, it says something like "Water spills should be cleaned up with sand or other nonflammable materials." After all, water is known to react violently with sodium and other alkalis.

Practice getting in and out of bed NOT using the "surgery leg", using arms to make up for it. Sooner you get the grasp of that, the less motional pain you'll have.

Just had my first physical therapist visit... he said the main risk is dislodging the connection before full bone rebuild occurs... so lay off the Texas Two Step ;-)

Also, ANY seating to be used after the surgery should have arms suitable for "pushing-off" from... upright using arms ONLY.

Kitchen stools become "pain in 15 seconds" :-(
