OT: "We Got Him!"

I bought some Havana Club rum when I was working in the USSR. It was very good. I bought it at one of those special stores that ordinary russians weren't allowed into; only Party members and foreigners with real money.

Interesting.

I read the Bacardi family destroyed all local Cuban traces of the fermentation starter yeast variety they used when their Cuban assets were confiscated and took the recipe elsewhere. I had heard the Cuban replacement was not as good. Thanks for your opinion.

Do you like rum?

Ron Zacapa 23 is good sipping rum.

10 Cane was fabulous but they quit making it for some reason.

Bacardi Gold is OK for mixing with coke or orange juice or setting on fire in Bananas Foster.

Bacardi is probably okay for rinsing out drains, but I sure don’t drink it!

Some years ago I experimented with rum. I was making "Latin Manhattan" cocktails.

It's better than malaria medication.

Humph. The British Empire was built on gin&tonic. ;)

The point of the BBC story was that 24 mills were still working, even if

29 weren't. The party and the workers can't conjure replacement parts out of thin air. They could get enough replacement parts to keep 24 mills working, but the trade embargo was tight enough that that was all that they could manage.

It seems to be doing okay in China,

Democratic socialism does a whole lot better, but a century of anti-socialist propaganda has left most Americans incapable of distinguishing totalitarian communism from democratic socialism, which is a pity. Europe runs a whole lot better under democratic socialism than the USA does under plutocracy. The US plutocrats still spend a lot of money on churning out that propaganda.

And didn't last all that long.

Not really. The USA applies sanctions to businessmen and businesses that trade with Cuba. including prison.

The embargoes we apply to them wreck and kill more.

Or, if what you say were true, then why bother to block and embargo them? Just leave them alone and they will crash. Yet they survive despite our embargoes for decades. Some even develop nuclear bombs so that we leave them f****ng alone.

Or on rum. I just ordered the books:

We have a rum stash here in our field office, for celebrating the occasional success.

google how many people did mao kill

That doesn't count the horrific one-child policy.

The real estate situation has been interesting lately too. And the sabre-rattling over the South China sea.

And Stalin. But Mao and Stalin are both dead, and while Putin is killing off a lot of Russian cannon fodder, China makes 80% of the solar cells sold around the world.

The fact that Trump's incompetence during the Covid epidemic killed off about 200,000 more Americans than would have died under better management isn't exactly an endorsement of free market capitalism.

What was horrific about it?

China has learned from the American example. Vietnam and Irak do come to mind.

Forced abortion and female infanticide.

I can't complain about the resulting birth rate, about half of replacement.

Forced abortion is pretty unpleasant, but not actually horrific.

Female infanticide wasn't actually part of the policy, though it was a fairly predictable consequence, given the Chinese preference for male offspring. The bureaucrats probably offered prenatal sex-determination early enough for early abortion to be an option.

The consequent distortion of the population sex ratio is likely to have unfortunate effects. Most advanced industrial countries now have sub-replacement birth rates. Their immigrant sub-populations mostly don't - that will take another generation, but the human population is now more or less on track to stabilise within a few decades. This is probably a good thing. The Chinese way of getting there wasn't.

If Trump were to decide that the US birth rate was too high he'd probably come up with a more less obnoxious solution - the problem isn't left-wing versus right-wing thinking but rather totalitarian versus democratic government. The US looks more plutocratic than democratic at the moment, but a couple more years of Trump may be horrific enough to cure that. I do hope not, but it isn't looking promising. That particular cure is worse than the disease (bad though the disease is).

Conservatives and Believers are breeding much more than socialists and radicals. If politics are passed on, through genetics or through learning, the trend looks promising.

But totalitarian? Plutocratic? That's crazy. We elected our government and most of them they are doing what they swore an oath to do, respect the Constitution and see that the laws are faithfully executed.

Europe seems to be headed in the direction of doing whatever the powerful feel like doing in real time. Expressing a peaceful opinion or even praying silently has become a crime. Sharia Law is OK. Industries can't afford employees or energy.

Just because Trump says Democrats openly encouraged political violence against Republicans doesn't make it true.

BTW who sent an huge angry mob to try and attack Democrats and allowed them chant "kill Mike Pence" while he just watched them on TV?

It was Trump.

Why do you follow him? If you watched anything other than Fox propaganda channel (or watched any news channel from almost any country other than the US) you'd know that.

WTF do you think you'll gain anyway from supporting Trump anyway, unless you're a millionaire Trump doesn't care about you at all.
