It wasn't just bundled software, they were doing switch and bait tactics with the file names, trick you into installing a toolbar down loader.

Things are so bad, i can almost get away with saying that there is NO available software on the net that can be directly downloaded;that they all have downloaders and almost all of those are loaded with junk.
Me too, since around 2001 I think.
That the way I did it too. Unfortunately I had to go to the dark side and invert that recently just so as to use a windows 3D CAD program :(

No there is plenty, you just need to be careful. Never download from a generic "download site". Go to the authors or programs own website and read about the program, only download from there. Do a search for the program name + the word "malware", see if much comes up. Don't just click on the blinkiest 3rd-party banner ad that says "DOWNLOAD NOW".

One approach is to install it to a VirtualBox VM, zip up just the parts you want and put the zipfile someplace, then revert the VM to the last snapshot.
And I wouldn't use it on the same system as anything important, because none of those packages are signed by the developer and no SHA256 signature is available.
I've been playing around with Qubes for some of these issues, and I think I'm in love. Check it out.

Qubes *does* look good, thanks for the heads up!

My statement holds even for most authors or programs own website. All Anti-virus programs that i have seen are this way, and their renewal nag also.
Many sites try to force Google Chrome on you (and what you would get,if you allowed it,is likely to be fake and to be polite, un-nice).
Must be _VERY_ careful!

Of course, you won't see this because you are an asshole who goes around calling people trolls.
The app actually costs money too, so most folks will pussy out of buying a real app as well.
