OT: search message (NNTP) error

In newsgroups, the search facility fails with message "A News (NNTP) error occurred: syntax error or unknown command". In all fairness, the search facility has NEVER worked and always failed the exact same way from Netscrape 4.75, 6.2, 7.2 and now SeaMonkey 1.1.16. Have used different ISPs as well. Help!

Well, first try a real newsreader, like thunderbird or pan (NOT Butthook Distress!). Do you have a real news server?

Under what circumstances does this error occur?

Thanks, Rich

Preferably Thunderbird. The filters are ace and only take around 10 minutes of setup so you no longer see any spam :-)...

News2.localnet.com has most NGs (including binary NGs), there are a few "missing" but i do not know eXplicitly which ones and do not care. AFAIK they "reflect" or "copy" from one of the big / main ones (do not know which one). So, i guess i could say that i have a real news server. The error as stated happens only when i attempt to do a search (of any type). Also, sometimes it says "Aborted by user" when i click the "search" button.

I can mix Thunderbird with SeaMonkey?

Of course. You can even run them simultaneously. You wouldn't get anything like an amalgam or hybrid; they'd still be two standalone apps, but why not?

Have Fun! Rich
