Hahaha, makes me think of Gandhi. A story goes as follows: Gandhi, whose professor didn't like his wits at all, turned in his exam only to receive it back with the word "Idiot" on it. He went to the teacher and said: I see you signed my paper, but what is the grade I got?

The prof should have written "Arrogant idiot", then Gandhi would have known it was addressed to him.

Yes, maybe he was arrogant also, but it seems to have all worked out nicely for India. :)

If you don't count the 200k - 2M deaths and 14M refugees in the botched partition of India.

Cheers

If the historical films I've seen are correct, it's hard to blame that part on Gandhi. I sense you don't like the "Mahatma". Why not?

It's not Ghandi per se - the British predicted there would be bloodshed if they left.

Ghandi is only critical in that he was necessary for them to leave.

Would India have become self-governing, and partitioned, without Ghandi?

Ghandi led a mass movement, and the mass movement would have ended up with a different leader if Ghandi hadn't been around.

Some historians blame Montbatten's get-it-done-quickly approach to partition for the deaths and the unrest. If the British had predicted bloodshed after they left, they might be seen as having an interest in making their prediction come true.

OK and his arrogance was thinking he could control the hatred of millions.

Still he was talking about getting along with others.. we could use more of that.. at least for me, here in the US we've turned the "other party" into what's evil.

Ghandi was the recognised leader of the independence movement - if he'd bee n assassinated earlier Nehru would probably have stepped up earlier to do t he same job, and there would have been a long queue of adequate leaders beh ind him.

.

I don't think he had all that much control of the way the British granted i ndependence to two partitioned countries.

The current crop of Republican presidential candidates does include quite a few people who look distinctly evil, and even Ben Carson has a enough stra nge ideas to rule him out of rational consideration - not that the Republic ans are big on "rational", though if James Arthur is anything to go by, the y can rationalise almost anything.

Neither Bernie Saunders nor Hilary Clinton looks particularly evil, though people who have negative reactions to socialism and Obamacare (even those s ophisticated enough to be able to differentiate the two) may differ.

Absolutely not.

The prevailing sentiment was of overbearing paternalism, and like all good parents the British hierarchy from the top down wanted to keep their children "together in the family".

In this case the family still exists as an institution, called "The Commonwealth", and is still important behind the scenes.

ition for the deaths and the unrest. If the British had predicted bloodshed after they left, they might be seen as having an interest in making their prediction come true.

This was the story for public relations purposes. The UK's approach to it's empire was - in practice - rather more pragmatic and rather more prone to letting the natives slaughter one another if the UK could be seen to have w ashed their hands of the problem before the blood-letting actually got unde r way.

Except when there's money or power at stake. As family figures go, the UK l ooks more like a wicked uncle, ripping off his dependents, than a benign pa terfamilias, doing his best for them. Not that the rest of the Commonwealth pays much attention to the common interests of its members either.

I prefer "naivete." He *DID* control the hatred of millions, through hunger strikes.

We don't have enough to do.

I'm not sure what that means? Not enough jobs?

I give my more republican friends credit, they are excited, and I'll be holding my nose and voting for who offends me less. (Here in NY who I vote for hardly matters.) As I said to the same friends, I do think Donald has the best chance of winning in the general election.

Not enough to think about?

That how representative democracy works.

Which means you have a depressingly low opinion of the average voter.

Donald Trump does too, and it shows. My guess is that he's a bit too obviou sly bottom-feeding to get elected - even if he gets selected as the Republi can candidate, and that process has enough room for back-room horse-trading to let the Republicans back a more respectable-looking horse (or ass).

Sarah Palin just endorsed herself and Trump was there too. He seemed to be on board with the idea.

Huh, No, these people are my friends, I respect their opinion. I think they are basically sick of the whole political scene in the US. (A sentiment I also share.) And are willing to throw any sort of monkey wre nch into the workings to shake it up.

The ditz is so stupid she cannot even pronounce 'skirmish' correctly. I doubt she can spell it right either.

Drill baby drill, is more likely swill baby swill while trump feels her up in the back room.

The ditz says even more stupid shit that trump himself, and I thought that wasn't possible until I saw their spewmercial event take place.

The ONLY thing she said that was true was about the Navy boats being detained being an illegal act, and she only said that because she read it online, not because she has any nautical knowledge.
