Here is a comment from reader claiming to be of Nigerian origin, I take it to be more than credible:

"I am an original and bona fide son of the Niger Delta from the main or center of oil and gas drilling and what ever operation in Rivers state Nigeria. A Kalabari Ijaw for that matter . These villagers are thieve s. Shell has payed through it's nose in the NIGER DELTA . All the oil Roya lty paid by oil companies that is supposed to be used for the development of host communities go directly to who they call Chiefs . The chiefs only share the money to themselves and a few loyalists who are ready to die for them . Nothing else is done with the money and this has been the case since SHELL started it's operation in the NIGER DELTA.. Now the same thieves h ave sued shell to pay some more money which when paid would still not be u sed for community development but would rather be shared by the same chiefs . Nigeria is a useless country. It is frustration from this that is making the rest of the local youths go in to illegal activities to steal crude oi l from oil pipe lines to sell. The international Court should rather jail a ll the chiefs that sued Shell and make them accountable for all the money shell has paid previously as oil royalty and other purpose.."

6,800 recorded oil spills??? I think not- they mean 6800 recorded cases of vandalism.

of vandalism.

The illegal oil-tapping is a major problem, but Shell hasn't yet worked out how to stop it, or even how to limit the amount of oil lost whenever the pipe-lines are breached. One can imagine schemes that might protect the more vulnerable sections of the pipe-line - armouring them, or enclosing them in a secondary structure which could be pressurised and the pressure monitored to detect breaches - but Shell hasn't gone to the trouble of paying for anything effective.

vandalism. Sounds like SOP to me, and i will bet you a whole penny that Shell knows all of this and most of the operators.
