Fits with my feeling that news anchors are clueless and read anything that scrolls down the teleprompter ;-) ...Jim Thompson

You mean just like dear leader?
There's a reason why they select news anchors and commentators for terminal gullibility. In order for an announcer to be effective at convincing an audience that the processed news that they're dispensing is real, the announcer must also firmly believe that it's true. That has to be done without thinking, without analyzing, and without any doubt, or the listening audience will smell something fishy and suspect that they're being misled. Such announcers are actually tested for their ability to deliver "believability" and "trust". The best way to accomplish this is for the announcer to simply not think about what they are saying. They just read it, and concentrate on acting sincere and believable. That generally works well, until someone hands them an obvious fabrication. Still, the announcer did sound like she actually believed the "confirmed" NTSB information she was reading.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, or yourself any time.

You are pretty much correct in that assumption.
