OT: Buying American Airlines tickets months ahead still ok?

Got an int'l trip coming up later this year, want to buy the tickets now so I don't end up with "no flights available" later (I have before ...). I like flying with them but since they are in chapter 11, is that still ok to do? What do thee think?

Chapter 11 is one of those things that airlines do periodically--not having to pay interest on all those airplanes reduces their operating cost, which gives them an advantage over other airlines.

Or you could branch out. (I may make platinum on Delta this year, more's the pity. I don't fit into economy seats very well--my shoulders are a good 2-1/2 inches too wide, and my femurs are an inch or so too long for the available knee room. Thus I concentrate pretty hard on getting upgrades, which means sticking to one airline unless that's absolutely impossible.)

Have you flown in a B717? I recently flew one and found the seating pitch to be a lot better than other planes. The knee room in the EExit row was incredible.

From out here (SMF) there ain't much choice unless you are willing to hang around at some stopover airport forever.

I had tons of miles with AA, it's otherwise a good airline. Used them also for upgrades and stuff.

AA's web site seem to offer the better deals versus priceline.com unless there are hidden fees that the other has included. Unfortunately they offer no insurance.

I'd also have to price that out versus others where I don't need to buy that.

Yikes. That's the worst case, being stuck. I am surprised other airlines weren't more accommodating. After all, I guess they'd like to pilfer some ex-fliers from the bankrupt airline and gouging is not the way to do that. That can backfire for years.

They are a bit smarter than that. And when they do a thorough backgrounder they'll see that I also design electronics for them thar flying machines so that probably makes me ok :-)

A friend was on a SouthWest Airlines flight, some years back. The pilot slammed the thing into the runway and bounced it high. While taxiing to the gate he came on the intercom; "This is Captain . Sorry about that landing but I've been on vacation for three weeks and kinda forgot how to fly this thing. For those of you continuing on on this flight, you'll be happy to know we change crews at this airport."

Can be worse. Me, four other guys plus pilot (the bush pilot kind of dude) in a Dornier-27. Shortly after take off, which happened a few feet before colliding with a fence. Rate of climb point-something feet per minute. Stall horn beeps, then comes on constantly. Pine trees approaching, tips are higher than we are. The pilot who otherwise never says anything let off things like "S..T!". When we reached that forest there was a swoosh sound and we could see the snow bursting off of the tree tops. After the landing there were pine twigs in the landing gear.
