This is another well-known immunological phenomenon that has been studied for the past 60 years. Just something else to be seriously researched and overcome with our more modern powerhouse capability for discovery.



Immunity tends to stick to its original response to infection or vaccination.



This part is not good at all: "In addition, these antibodies (to original strain) inhibit the activation of higher-affinity naive B cells that would be able to make more effective antibodies to the second (variant) virus."

Yes, around 3% of us did not take the second shot, so we can see if we can response better to the mutants. I avoided the second shot, but many if us just forgot. Overactive long term immune response induced by the second shot may not be too good after all.

Of course it's more of a problem when there are lot more variants of the virus around. There are a lot of different strains of Covid-19 but it's only had a year or so, and some 141,316,012 victims, in which to diversify, and it's unusually stable for a an RNA virus.

Influenza has a much longer history and has infected a lot more people. HIV has also been around for quite a while, but only seems to have infected about 75 million people. Half of them are still alive and still infected.

I'm happy that the population includes a 3% who are brave enough to do something completely stupid. Their misfortunes may leave the rest of us better informed.

If Ed Lee's poor judgment kills him off, it won't be much of a loss.
