nice toaster

So many consumer gadgets are really junk, or over-featured messes, or need to be repaired/redesigned immediately. Like I bought a couple of Weber gas bbq's that make flames about 1/8" high and blow out in a mild breeze. You have to disassemble them and drill out the jet if you actually plan to cook something.

Anyway, if you ever need a toaster, this one is great:

It looks good, no fru-fru, no digital displays, and really toasts. It's just a pleasure to use something that's built well.

I've bought six so far. I give them as presents.

I had one like that. Useless - the cheese keeps falling off.

They should be LP canister only. Grill are portable, and as far as I know NG is not available in small tanks. There are other issues

Probably a Californication regulation limitation.

My Weber Summit S-470 is fantastic! Rather nice how it auto-lights.

Get a simple Weber kettle. Ours is over 20 years old, works as new. I even bake pizza and bread in it. Rain or shine. My favorite method of cooking is making a real wood fire in there, let it burn down far enough, then grill or barbecue. I like manzanita, our neighbor prefers cherry wood. The last time I cooked indoors was ... I can't even remember.

But it does have electronics. We bought this super simple one after the electronics gave out on the previous toaster:

Propane. The fitting is for a blowtorch cylinder, or a big tank with an adapter hose. We have a tiny deck hanging off the kitchen so one of those kilobuck monsters wouldn't fit.

The Brat laughs at me for cooking on this tiny thing. She prefers those chrome SUV-sized grills. She eats the salmon and steaks, though.

It's a standard Weber thing, from Amazon. Maybe it's some safety thing.

I turn the knob and push the starter button. And try not to freeze to death out there on the deck.

I crumple some newspaper (the leftist stuff burns best ...), sprinkle on some kindling wood, add 4-5 manzanita pieces of a size that fits the cooking time, light it ... whoosh ... and then read the paper. Occasionally with beer in hand. 15-20 minutes later I start cooking.

For such jobs we have the SMT version of our big grill kettle, our "Weberito" (but a much oder model):

It normally lives in a downstairs cooking alcove where we could even barbecue over charcoal or wood fire inside the house. Has its own flue. I used to do that but found I like cooking outdoors better. We even barbecue when it storms and hails out there. Then the barbie gets tied to a large post and the lid gets strapped onto the kettle bottom so it won't fly off (which happened once).

That would cover maybe 30% of the surface area of the deck. It's a little redwood thing cantelevered out in space outside the kitchen.

We haven't used our gas grill in a couple of years, since we got the Green Egg. I've got to get it to the dump, sometime.
