Low power radio help

I'm looking for a low power, secure, low data rate radio system that can be purchased as an OEM. It only needs to broadcast 40 feet or so. I need to have a master unit talk to 4 remote units, and the master can initiate all communications. I need this to be secure, however, and it also needs to work in a potential environment where many (OK, say 10) of these systems may be range.



Anyone know enough about this to make some suggestions? I've did a bluetooth project some time ago, so I know that is a possiblity, but this system never needs to talk to anything else.



Off hand I was thinking of using a microcontroller with a 24 bit A to D converter in it (like the Analog Devices ADUC847 that I designed into the cable based version of this product) to read the sensor and run the RF module. It would be great if the module had FCC approval too.

You can get those 'keyfob' radios for $15/pair. They allow addressing of 1024 units, and certainly have the range. Sadly, no security. The pic 'keyloq stuff might help, or you can build some kind of secure encryption/decryption layer on top of the comm channel.

TLP434/RLP434 is the part number I've used before.

Thanks Rene' and Bob Monsen for your replies, I will check out both Zigbee and the possiblities of using a keyfob type thingy.
