Google up "series linear regulator". You can do it yourself with a Zener diode, a transistor that can handle the 11W or so of power disipation (heat sinks love you and want you to be happy), and a couple resistors. Or, for only 3A, someone probably sells an IC linear regulator that'll do it in one chip; check National and Linear.
Either way, don't put it in your lap; it's likely that during normal operation much toastyness will occur.
That said, if the laptop works fine and dandy with your kluged power supply, the $30-40 investment in a long and happy life for it might be in order.
