Life vests and fire extinguishers

Jun 18, 2010 47 Replies

I'm a bit puzzled as to the connection between this post and electronics. Perhaps the life vests have electronic flashers, or the fire extinguishers were designed using LTSpice, or ???

Come on, Jim, Usenet is not your personal soapbox. This is getting tiresome.

Just maybe during a crisis isn't the best time for "standard" operating procedures, eh?

Obama can't change history but he could very well declare an emergency, for starters.

Its CYA time. If a problem arises on a barge and a subsequent investigation determines that they were improperly equipped with safety equipment, some nit-picking whiner will blame it on Obama.

Now there's the kind of 'leadership' we need in a crisis: CYA.

You've got to be kidding. It would be blamed on Jindal and Obama would place a 6 month moratorium on oil cleanup.

He just forgot to stick an "OT:" in front of it. :-)

A barge collecting highly flammable oil will not get very much protection from basic class 4 fire extinguishers. Even if they were

50Lbs each.

Essentially, if they were not performing examinations last month like a horse with a burr under his saddle, then they don't need to be 'suddenly' getting all formal on folks. So if they did just recently start this crap, I would be curious as to what the trigger was.

It will if a spark ignites a pile of rags and someone can put it out before it spreads to the cargo.

Someone took a couple of shortcuts on safety measures on a drilling platform, eleven people were killed, the platform sank and the well is still leaking oil. Who wants their name on the next f*ck-up?

Even that doesn't matter. MAYBE it did back in the POTS days, but not now.

I hate netkkop wanna be retards. The only thing they succeed in getting from their wanna be is the 'retard' part.

The owners and operators are responsible before any inspection might take place.

If this had been seen to, there'd be no need now. Whoever failed in this respect, is obviously not suffering.

RL

Yes, they are, and that does not guarantee that they will or did, and that is why the Coast Guard has done examinations... FOR DECADES.

Actually, such inspections are an annual exercise, and for all we know, it just came up on the CG normal schedule.

Should they be?

There are plenty of rag piles on a barge on a mission to collect highly flammable materials. Sure, Bub.

Not only that, but on such a vessel there is going to be NO ignition sources present at all.

And if there IS a spark, it will likely result in an explosion, not a fire. The fumes from that stuff are wild and wooly.

As a, so called, 'community organizer' and guest lecturer that's all he really knows how to do: complain about things, demonize, and speak flowery, self promoting, bullshit.

That kind of 'talent' depends on how much smoke you can blow so the straw men look plausible and while someone else is in charge that, unfortunately, works with the rabble but goes down the drain damn quick when *you* are 'the man' in charge of a crisis.

So then lets just not equip them with fire extinguishers. Right?

I wouldn't let you take a row boat out in a pond.

If you are so goddamned stupid that you think that they would have ZERO extinguishers, you should go marry John Larkin, or the other retard, KRW.

I probably know more about boating and the sea than you ever will.

Extremely silly to hear that form a full time troll. Tell us on how many newsgroups are you trolling these days? Seen your ugly rantings one quite a few......

In fairness Mr. Obama faces a dilemma. Imagine you're keeping your boot on someone's throat. Now imagine you want to kick them in the rear too. How? (And how are they able to plug a mile-deep hole while you're doing this?)

Choices, choices, choices.

Exactly. No kkk, wanna be, or retard about this kid.

Bwuahahahahahahahahahahha!

Unless there was reason to believe that some of the barges were not seaworthy or were manned by inadequately trained operatives likely to endanger themselves and others. Going into hurricane season it seems fair enough to insist on having life vests and rafts though.

You don't have to look very far back in the news for oil tanker hits barges and causes big oil spill (nearly half a million gallons):

Inspect on next return to port ought to have been good enough. I have to say that with an oil fire that is anything bigger than 10' square even with training it takes some skill to get it back under control.

So having the right extinguishers for oil will probably not matter a damn if they do not also have the training to go with it. Most people aim too high at the flames and miss the base of the fire entirely.

Seems likely.
