The Republicans sure can't seem to catch a break. Now they're not only going to have to fight to get their candidate into office, but also fight a knockdown, dragout legal fight among all three branches of government to delay Obama appointing a liberal successor.

Bad luck. I'm sure they were praying that something like this didn't happen before Obama left office.

None of the people trying to become their nominated candidate for the offic e of president looks attractive enough to run for dog-catcher with any hope of success.

What a pity.

I'm sure that they were. Sadly, at least one eminent jurist right-wing enou gh to appeal to Republicans didn't have enough sense to avoid eating himsel f into an early grave. Diet advice to the judge might have worked better th an prayer to a remote deity, though neither is likely to have taken it seri ously.

This may work out for the Democrats. Much like the way the Republicans had to back off from shutting down the government to block passage of budgets, protracted confirmation hearings without much substance may work against the Republicans in the election. With many months to go before the polls open for the election, there can be a lot of voter animosity generated by mishandling of the situation.

Yup, if they try to filibuster the selection process, the Dems will slam them on the campaign trail again and again for holding up the process of government.

Do you cut your losses and focus on the campaign, and have a better chance at a 4 or 8 term president in exchange for a liberal supreme court justice to be appointed for life? Or do you try to expend time and resources to block it, and potentially lose both? Quite a pickle.

As Mr. Sloman says, given the characteristics of the current crop of Republican candidates, I bet there are some wishing that they could give Obama a third term in exchange for keeping a conservative judge on the bench.

Animosity never bothered a true rock-ribbed conservative. Any issues that come up can be dealt with by Faux Nooz, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, that guy with the brain problem, and the Sunday morning serious pundits. Maybe Walker, Texas Ranger too.

Jim Thompson foolishly advertises his terrorist ambitions. Come the revolution, and his neighbours will immediately get together to neutralise him with extreme prejudice him before he can put his widely announced plans into action.

Who doesn't look left-wing to Jim?

Speculation is Obama will nominate a recently confirmed Federal bench appoi ntee making it difficult for senate Republicans to reject someone they once voted to confirm. If they refuse to take up the issue altogether, Obama is empowered to make a recess appointment and that will last until Sanders fi nally takes office.

Were I in their position I'd invest in the justice, they'e going to need SC support if they want to fix another election.

Bill Maher just smoked a joint with his panel on his show.

Sounds like a move in the right direction.

After all, Obama says that it is no more harmful than alcohol.

Um, the Republicans are in control of the Senate (though sometimes it's difficult to tell). There is nothing to filibuster.

There is no "block it". They just don't do anything.

Slowman's an idiot and you're no more, for even giving credence to such drivel.

Sorry for the confusion, by using that term I used it in the more "generic" sense to mean "try to delay the action by whatever means you can", not in reference to the specific action as taken in the Senate.

only 24 hours and fox news is already talking about the "vicious conflict" in appointing a new judge.

this is the problem with the right -- if there isn't a problem (yet), let's call it one and go from there.

assholes.

of course, that should be obvious from the circus of egomaniacs (less kasich), running for president.

Well everyone knows Obama ordered him killed, and Hillary's lesbian lover did it. Right?

It would have been better if compulsory mandation of education on the subject had been mandated. Like with socialism/communism education (communists smoke pot, I believe).

There's $42 billion in annual costs to the American taxpayer because pot smokers, growers and distributors are very sneaky.

It all started in 1619 with King James I ordering every colonist to grow

100 cannabis plants for fiber and whatnot. Even George Washington got snookered into growing hemp as one of his primary crops.

That crummy hemp is not the same thing with less than 3% the active ingredient of the potent south American stuff. Don't let facts get in the way though.

If the ever-modest Obama proposes someone acceptable to the Senate, there will be no problem.
