I haunted them all and haven't seen anything but piles of old Weller solder stations and the occasional Hakko.

Good! I liked the Hakko I used at one place, too. Their wiry tip cleaners are the Cat's Pajamas!

You have to start with one of the really wide tips. I have the low-end

200-series Metcal in my office (only production gets the super-good ones) and they don't have fork tips.

Hey, i have used one of those; for soldering sheet metal. Heated it in a gas fired furnace though. Some decades ago though.

Actually, I believe that is a soldering copper.

Soldering irons are quite rare.

Actually, almost all modern soldering iron tips are iron.

The iron plating doesn't dissolve in the solder like copper does... but that thing is not very modern looking.

Actually, Maxwell's equations in point form are worth knowing. The best approach to a problem isn't always obvious, and there's a LOT of insight that can be missed if you just connect boxes. Peripheral vision, broad knowledge, can pay back unexpectedly.

I'm reminded of a student who wanted an exact pair of resistors to set a gain; his problem required a constant RATIO of resistors, not absolute accuracy of the individual units. Of course, a matched array will track with temperature and achieve constancy of ratio far better than the absolute accuracy numbers indicates. His real problem was that he'd focused down to that SINGLE THING he had to control.

Gas fired? Ugh. The manly thing would be to gather some wood, start a fire, wait until it's burned down to coals, then solder. The wait time is around 1-2 beers :-)

The stuff that the stained-glass people use is interesting. They have heat-resistant copper foil tape and big flat soldering irons. There must be an electronic use for that stuff.

There is, you can build nice shield cans with it. But personally I use copper stock (still from my grandpa).

It makes a first-class antenna element and is weatherproof curled up inside of a piece of PVC pipe with end caps.

Hinged shield boxes and power distribution in prototypes, for a start. I have several rolls of the stuff. The good stuff doesn't short out to the ground plane when you make a power bus out of it.

I also use Gorilla superglue to attach TO-220s and pad adapters to ground planes. That never shorts out either.

I sometimes just glue down a strip of thin copperclad FR4 as a bus.

3M double-stick foam tape is good, too.

You've just got to be careful not to poke those wires through and hit ground.

Only if you can't solder with a real iron and need training wheels. A real man can solder with a piece of copper wire and an open flame. Even fine pitch SMD devices.

Toys are OK, but it's easy to be overly dependent on them.

It's easy to think outside the box, when you have a cutting torch.
