Interesting movie

Apparently it's already on 20% of new cards sold in the US (maybe one you own). Think of all those new semiconductors in *every* car, just from one bit of legislation.

How can a device save lives in a single car accident where nobody is going to die anyway?

My idea exactly. I've driven a Volkswagen SUV a few weeks ago but I was surprised by its lack of stability while going around corners. Because of the sloppy suspension on most US cars, I suppose stability is a real issue over there. Over here we say American cars aren't made to drive around corners :-)

Uhhh? Isn't a Volkswagen a European vehicle ?:-)

I drive an Infiniti (Nissan) Q45... very stable vehicle.

Now my light pickup truck, Frontier, also Nissan, leans a lot in corners, yet shows no tendency to spin out; but the wind moves it around a lot.

Yes, but SUVs tend to be less stable, but cars in Europe usually have stiff suspension. The Volkswagen Golf is almost uncomfortable, but a great car to take corners.

Japanese generally know how to get their cars right -technically-.

If you were not so well respected, I would think you were joking. Obviously you have never taken the time to read the annual statistics:

Notice on page 49, where fatal single vehicle crashes are 21,739 for

2004, and fatal multiple vehicle crashes are substatially less at 16,514 for the same period.

Notice that most of those leave the road, and many of the deaths are from roll overs, even in cars. One of the factors that causes cars (and SUV)s to leave the road and roll over, is locking up the brakes and losing steering control ... ABS systems prevent that.

so, please don't joke about things that kill people -- lots of them ... many of them young inexperienced drivers (IE peoples kids).

That is a sick stupid joke that trivializes the problem, and will certainly lead to more deaths. While speeding is one factor in some deaths, most are from normal traffic speeds, at or below 55mph. Read the nhts statistics.

Reply to
fpga_toys

not even close ... most of the deaths are from roll overs, mostly from leaving the road by losing control from locked up brakes. Note that ABS reduces car deaths as reported by the article by 77%, just from this single factor.

ABS and a system that automatically applies differential braking when it decides that you're "veering off course" are entirely different schemes.

With the kind of "engineers" we have in the automotive industry these days I'd be concerned that the "system" would decide wrong and toss me off the roadway... probably because the OS would be Windows ;-)

and the factor which causes locking up brakes is the drivers foot which is connected to their brain.

One of the few remaining sources of natural selection which over hundreds of thousands of years made us what we are and regretably has been almost completely confounded by man in the last couple of hundred.

Hardly "entirely different schemes", but extending/integrating the ABS system to include feedback from the TCS (Traction Control System) and AYC (Yaw Control Stability System) with additional controls for throttle override. There are/will be probably a number of implementations, all based around the existing ABS system which already does part (or all) of this in vehicles that have been shipping in recient years to correct wheel lock-up, wheel spin or loss of vehicle control.

The "veering off course" is exactly what ABS has been preventing for some time, to maintain steering for control instead of lockup and skidding.

ESC is a broader name, to include additional inputs and controls, for the exisitng ABS systems goals and function.

Over here this usually happens in corners. ABS won't help there. If the speed is too high, the tyres lose grip in the corner and the laws of physics do the rest. A simple course 'how to handle a car on a slippery road' is probably more effective. I also believe the car itself is a factor. Some cars give you very little feedback through the steering wheel on how much grip the tyres have.

I prefer evolutionary Darwinism. Let the fools who can't control their vehicles perish.

Agreed! I'v been driving for 50 years and I've never _caused_ an accident, but I've been hit from the side 3 times (red light/stop sign runners) and I had a person turn left in front on me once when I was right in front of their eyes ;-)

Ah, would that we _could_! Something like this would at least cut down on passenger deaths and innocent bystander deaths:

I think it turns out that ABS doesn't make cars any safer.

Well, it sure is safe for the guy you crash into because of your negligence! ;-)

In this instance, fear is your friend - it kept you paying attention to the task of safely operating a motor vehicle!

Safer only if you understand the expected behavior during a panic event.
